Full Version: Has anyone ever seen a genuine gold coin this discolored?

Hard to imagine this as being genuine ... looks like the gold plating is wearing off:
1899 gold 10 roubles
Even if it were genuine, who would want a coin like this? confused1.gif

Yes, but the cr@p is on the surface of the coin, like something was melted on it, or it went through a fire. Then it was cleaned, albeit unprofessionally.

A while back LostDutchman purchased three very early USA silver dollars that were slabbed and went through a fire:



Notice that even though the coin has been professionally conserved, that you can still see the unfortunate tell tale signs that the coin went through a fire. sorry.gif

Good question, and I agree with your point, but some people buy cruddy looking coins (harshly cleaned, hairlined, gouged, etc.) all the time - but they're rare. To me, a cruddy coin is a cruddy coin, no matter how rare it is. When I look at a coin, I like to admire its beauty. Just goes again to prove that there is no accounting for taste, and all of us collect for different reasons.
