I guess I'll start stocking up on post 1982 coins as well.

The vending machine lobby, actually a pretty powerful lobby in these matters, is fighting this big time. Of course they could care less about the cent, but the nickel is another matter. Basically the machines are set to reject anything magnetic, so that Canadian 5¢ coins are rejected and to undo that mechanism involves expense. The bill passed the House, but has a an uphill battle in the Senate, and will likely get shot down there, or by the President.
