are you asking if its original? I think it is.

I know it is original. I guess the question is not fair. It should have sounded as a riddle: "Do you see anything unusual about this coin?" or "Find a major difference between this coin and regular polushka." evilbanana.gif

I just wanted to dilute a bit the monotony. unsure.gif

Almost everyone here is going to tell you it's fake. The other's will complain that it's not slabbed. I think the best idea is to send to me immediately and forget all about it. Rarenum...you probably have 3 of these already and you shouldn't take up any more valuable space in your trays. No, I think it's best it's sent to me yes.gif

It is not slabbed, and it is not fake, so it is just fine and you should keep the coin and enjoy it bthumbsup.gif I like the coin, so I hope now you are happy bthumbsup.gif

If Rarenum and I are both jumping to get this, you should probably look a little carefully and consider why. ' biggrin.gif

Green spot is a new development. It came from the tears of joy that I shed when I took it out of the envelope. happybday.gif Could be easily cleaned off with any strong acid or by harsh mechanical cleaning (sandpaper and such) clown2.gif That is no reason to sell it.

I had to check my references to see what is special about it. It's not listed in GM, Brekke or Uzdenikov, but is in Bitkin.

Hmm.

Not slabbed, metal flaw, green spot, probably "no grade" if you send it to TPG experts.

Must be junk. evilbanana.gif hysterical.gif

As I said before, I am a sucker for rarity. bwink.gif Sadly, it probably would not slab, and is of no interest to some "numismatists" here. bleh.gif

By the way, judging by the position of the cypher on Bitkin plate coin, I think he simply photographed a denga, and not a true mule like this one.

Yes..R4 is rare alright. biggrin.gif

The normal size cipher can, of course, be seen in my avatar.

Thank you all! By the way, the weight is 1.61g. The coin is much thinner than the ordinary 1797 polushka. Edge normal:"\\\\\\"

1797-EM Polushka with obverse of Denga was not known or published anywhere just 10 years ago if I am not mistaken. Any pieces known surfaced just a few years ago and Bitkin included this coin into second edition of his catalogue (there is no such a coin in the first edition). Where he got the information? May be someone present on this forum provided the info? I would send this coin to GIM before declaring this authentic. I am always skeptical about "new discoveries".

So is this one the coin used by Bitkin? or another previously known example? Steve, do you have any in your database?

While what you say is true, Bitkin writes that there is a coin in private hands. It is possible, however, to ask him about the source of the information. Since that publication, my is the second specimen (that I know of) that came to light. In my opinion the coin is genuine. The dies match the existing dies. Luckily, I have about 4 to 8 specimens og 1797 em dengas and polushkas for comparison and a Carl Zeiss Stemi 11 microscope (if that tells you anything...) The patina is old and not artificial. I have no reason to doubt the coin.

I am surprised that you did not advise me to send it to NGC. All in all, you can send your specimen of this coin to GIM if you wish. I will keep it as far away from Russia as possible. I already lost a Sievsk Chekh there "in the mail".

GIM will do the same, I believe this coin missing in GIM collection, so the best what they will do the same as KBK did (match the dies to other dies). smile.gif

All of these seem like reasonable proposals. Visitation rights for BKB seems only fair (he knows my address). laugh.gif

He can even bring his microscope to look at it rofl1.gif

Guys, we could make arrangements involving Steve's and David's polushkas (if you do not know which ones we could discuss that further in a personal chat.) Then, technically, all of us would have all three coins in our collections. :-)

Damn thing is way too heavy. I will have to buy one for you to save my back. It is only like $12,000 to $15,000 new :-) But, you can certainly get it for less in Brooklyn. buba.gif

Rarenum, was it you who advised Bitkin to put this coin into his catalogue? Do you have another piece? GIM have enough equipment not only a microscope which is in many cases useless for coins with such a simple design and corrosion. Believe in what you want people.

Yep, they should have encapsulated it. Or send it to GIM. Only then it would become a great rarity! (MS70 mint glassy clear or something...) Possibly they would not even be able to tell that it is a broken off piece. How much corrosion do you see on the coin? Do not respond, it is rhetorical. Did we not agree to stay away from each other posts?

WCO,
1. I will skip first two questions.
2. Third questions you should ask experts from the GIM.
3. Fourth question in simple design and corrosion I’m not agree with you, but it is your opinion and I respect it.
4. I didn’t get "Believe in what you want people" .We are all human and members of coinpeople...
By the way, if you have your own opinion about coin listed by BKB it is great to know.

Great,

Now I have to check my collection for the fourth example.

Darn, do not have one.

BKB, as usual you have a knack for finding some unusually rare pieces. You proved time and time again, those who do not look, will never find and those who do not read, will never know! bthumbsup.gif
lennysky
Also, to WCO, if you have a theory to prove this coin is not genuine, I agree with your stand. However, unless you have proof, I would not be too adamant about your statements. There are very serious collectors on this post, who can attest about BKB's numismatic experience. he never makes a statement without first thoroughly researching the topic. On another hand, you..... well you know the answer. Stick to slabbed silver coins and you should be just fine clapping.gif

My friend, you only forgot that authenticity must be proved not the contrary. I advised to authenticate the coin first, then to claim it is genuine. Just remember, there is no collector of Russian coins in this world who can authenticate all Russian coins without mistakes on his own. Some people know more, some - less, no one knows everything.
