WoW - that's some very valuable cereal!
I didn't realize that you can't see the reverse in the original packing. How do you authenticate without seeing the tail feathers?

The gentleman who i purchased it from had it in a plastic bag with a bunch of other coins.... so he didn't know what it was but he was very very surprised and speechless when i told him what i would pay for it.
from looking at some other sales of these pieces.... I think I must have it certified.... I have looked at the obverse and there is a die marker that only appears on genuine coins and this one has it.

I eat a ton of Cheerios and did get the penny.
I wonder how many of these pattern dollars were spent and went into circulation?
And I wonder how many are sitting in a shoe box with worthless bits and bobs?
There is one currently on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $23000.
Amazing find Matt. I really need to get me a store one of these days...

Excuse my ignorance... but what about is here? What's so special with these coins?
LostDutchman

Basically the what happened is the US mint had some (15-30) of these struck before the original 2000 release in gold which were sent to space on the space shuttle.. then displayed around the country... and somehow for the cheerios strikes the same reverse was used for those dollars that was used for the gold pieces. These were made before the regular run of business strike 2000 P's... This reverse has some differences in the design. This wasn't discovered until 2005... 5 years after the coins release.... So the theory is that a lot of the 5,500 that were put in the boxes were ripped open and spent by the kids who got them.. not knowing they were rare... There were 5,500 released in 11,000,000 boxes of cheerios..I checked the pop reports from PCGS and NGC... there is a total of 30 something coins... but a lot of them look like resubmissions trying to get an 67 into a 68 holder.... so my guess is there are 15-20 coins in top tier slabs..

And the other 5480 coins were either spent or sit in a box/drawer in someones attic/closet/under the bed.
The dies from the gold Sackies were used because they were the only dies available to produce the coins in time to get them in the Cheerios boxes by Jan. 1st 2000.

NGC would have pedigreed it
NGC Article - The Lost Dutchman specimen - has a nice ring to it! Will PCGS do the same?

I think the US mint should do OMS strikes in gold for all circulating coins, ala what Monnaie de Paris has done for years.

Over on CU, someone posted that NGC received a Cheerios-packaged 2000-P dollar and cent that was opened by them and found to have a normal Sacagawea dollar rather than the pattern. Mike Wallace @ smalldollars.com is suppose to putting a pic up on his site

I dont know if I answered or not... but there is a die polish line coming out of the obverse neck of all of the authentic examples... which this coin had

Wouldn't that encourage some people to start gold-plating business strikes and passing them off as the real thing, though?

Was this the most valuable coin to ever walk into your shop Matt?
(Probably at least the most valuable found in a box of cereal, eh?)
