It's an error!
If that small tab hadn't been ther and that part been fully sheered off, it'd be known as a clipped coin. Since it seems that it was clipped after minting, I don't know what you call it.
Nice find. Especially with the early date.

It's a mint error, but not a double strike. It's called an Indented Second Strike. An Indent Second Strike is when a coin is struck normally and was struck a second time off-center.

If I were you I'd go to the www.coppercoins.com web site. The guy there has two books out on Lincoln Cents and really wants more info such as your coin.

This would be considered a double strike.... and not an "indented second strike" that term refers to something completely different. it would also be one I would like to examine closer before giving it the complete thumbs up...
