I chose yes... I dont really have a "coin shop" in town. But ther is a store downtown that an older couple own, and the man sells coins out of the store...though his prices are little on the higher end.

When at college (most of the year) there isn't a good coin dealer nearby. There are some big ones in downtown Chicago (the dealers are occasional members of this forum, I think) but I don't have time to go.
But I've got a dealer back home who is all right. But I'm never home enough!

Got a bunch of choices around. Just have not hit them all. One I like because the price is "flexible" another the range of coins, and the last a new one I dropped by the owner and folks in the store.

A couple but they dont sell much of what I collect, they sell mostly american coins.

Intersting, I personally have a coin dealer in my local town. He's okay, sells american, and mexican coins, and a handful of world coins. Although I know this other guy with a bigger store out of town. What I like is that he's prices are flexible. Keep it up, I still haven't seen a geezer.

Yes, but I have not been in a few years. Last time I was there, the prices were pretty insane.
Might have to go back by, just out of curiousity.

You need another option: "Yes, but they don't handle world coins."

Closets is about 5 miles away. I think there are 6 with-in a 20 miles radius of home.

If 20 miles is local then yes I have a local coin store.
There is no better place to buy supplies, if you talk to the owner and leet them know you can get the same supply online for $xx, and ask them to match the price, I bet they will if they can.

My nearest one is a good 50+ miles away...
So I have to resort to eBay, online shops, metal detectorists, fairs and people emailing me. I find shops are too expensive for what I want anyway.

I got lucky moving out here to find one on main street. It's very small but the guy who owns it is really nice and doesn't talk down to me (I get funny looks every time I enter a shop).

There are three coin shops in town that I am aware of, and another one or two in nearby areas that I haven't visited. The major dealer in town is located a few miles from my home, and he has the best selection/inventory, so when I buy from a coin shop, I buy from him. His inventory far exceeds the other two local shops combined, and, in addition, probably that of the other one or two nearby. He's extremely knowledgeable and sells for fair prices.

One of the nearest coin shops to me would probably be Spink but I hardly ever buy from them as they are usually top-notch prices, their auctions are much more attractive!

they just won't own up to it in a survey

i'm only aware of one dealer in sf ... a few miles from where i live. i visited once and got the impression that i wasn't welcome from the person staffing the shop, and i never went back.
google seems to turn up quite a few more. too bad i didn't do this on wednesday--i had thursday and friday off and could have explored some of these.

It's kind of a coin shop. It is a antique shop where different dealers rent space. One sells coins.

Actually, no. I find them to be way overpriced. Plus I don't pay sales tax if I buy out of state. Its nice to look in their window though.

There are three shops within about 20 miles of me. There is also a dealer at the Flea market. I buy from all from time to time.

I became friends with my local coin dealer and even played bass in his band for a few years. (We are both amateur musicians.)
The landlord raised the rent on his store so much in 2004 that he moved 50 miles away, about a mile from his home in Bellport.
I still make the trip to his new store once a month or so to say hello and see what he has to offer.
I also have a small collection of TAG Heuer watches and he is the only person I let touch them.

Stack's always has a window full of super nice coins...
I agree that they are a bit overpriced, but then again the rents on 57th Street in NYC are obscenely expensive. Maybe $50000 a month. Maybe more.
Also they are more willing to help a mink coat wearing widow "dispose" of her deceased husbands US gold collection than to answer my dumb questions...

Nearest ones are about 15 and 30 miles away. Closer to home there some hobby and antique shops which sell some well overpriced material.

There are about 10 coin shops within a half-hour drive of my primary residence. Of these, I have only found two to be worth visiting again. And again.
Closest coin shop that I know of is out of State in Montana. It's about a two hour drive. Next closest is in state, but over the mountain and about 45-60 minutes longer to get to. Needless to say, we don't shop at brick and mortar shops only because we can't unless we make it a day event and spend $40 for gas there and back again.

Used to be a lot of coin shops in my area. Lately many have gone. In the downtown area of Chicago there used to be many but most have vanished. One of the greatest was on the 5th floor of Carson's store on State street but that store is now some kind of condo or something. Only one left that I know of downtown and one of ther worst dealers imaginable. Some in the suburbs but those also are vanishing. One flea market had almost seven coin dealers but that one closed down. I suspect the reason is the numerous coin shows in the Illinois area. One almost every weekend and occationally a few hugh ones. For example during April this area is flooded with coin shows of almost every possible size.
