Hello all,
Thanks for the info on the Italian coin, I think it is probably a copy or something since it is not what I would call hefty.
Anyway, on to my next quest.
This coin is a 1771 Pillar 8r with two chop marks. I took several coins to to a dealer to have them appraised and he said that this one was real, he then said if I wanted to sell it he would give me $50.00. He had just before this paid me $350 each for two silver Alexander the Great coins,(that I found out later sold for $4000 each. Ouch!) So deciding not to sell this one (which he assured me was not in demand at the moment and that he was doing me a great favor just taking them of my hands) might have been the right thing to do. But can anyone tell me what a coin in this condition might sell for and what condition would one describe this coin as?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The other side of the coin looks like this. I don't seem to be able to get two pics on a posting here.

He sounds quite shady. If you have other coin dealers around your area, I think it would be best to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

That coin, if real, would be worth much more than $50. To me the color looks a bit funny, one diagnostic besides weight (which must be very close to 27.06g) and it being non-magnetic, it should have a distinctive edge device, like a flower, not just some grooves.

Hello,
Thanks ok I tested it with a magnet nothing happened. The weight in the paper/plastic coin holder is 28.3g. I guess I should take it out of the holder and weigh it again I just did'nt want to get my fingers all over it. I looked at the edge and it has a design on it they sort of look like flowers in the shape of a V.
How do I get a scan of the coins edge?
I will try to get a side scan if I can and will post it back on here so you can see it.

That's putting it mildly.

Good advice.

And that line about it being "not in demand at the moment and that he was doing me a great favor just taking them of my hands" is just that, a line.

Dealers make their money by turning over inventory. If a coin is not in demand, it is money that is tied up and not working for him.

If he's buying $4,000 coins from you for $350, then he's a shark and you look like dinner.

The edge device looks authentic to me from the picture you supplied. Mind you I am not an expert, but I've looked at a number of these. The reason I mention the weight is that these coins were produced with a great deal of quality control. If the weight of your coin is more than 5% off of 27.0674 grams, than it is highly suspect. The chopmarks sometimes drop the selling price, and it looks cleaned, but by all means would fetch much more than $50.

The first thing I do is weigh a coin when I receive it. Especially old gold and silver. The scale she no lie.

The coin does appear cleaned but the condition looks to be a nice XF for the reverse and VF/VF+ for the obverse. Probably worth $75-$125 on eBay, even with the chop marks.

My two cents. grin.gif
