Thanks, Steve! hi.gif

There were two "OCC" variety 15 rouble 1897 with Adam's apple and one "OCC" without. The other two were "CC". Nice to know that it wasn't just the different lighting in the other auction pictures. biggrin.gif

Wow! I never realized there were 2 "OCC" varities, but just looked at two 15R coins I have (both "OCC"), and indeed one has an apple and the other does not.

But what about 10 rubles?

I just discovered that while all catalogs that I have available (Bitkin, Severin, Uzdenikov) list varieties for 15 rubles, nobody mentions anything about 10 rubles varieties of Nicholas II. However, there are (at least) 2 varieties:

and

http://www.grafficserver.de/cgi-bin/889/vi...fd&el=3584#

The first variety I have seen on 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904,1909,1910,1911.
The second variety I often see on 1898 and 1899, but this time time it showed up on 1904--I don't think I've seen this before.

The illustration in Bitkin is the 1st variety, in Uzdenikov it is the 2nd one, and Severin does not have any illustration for Nicholas II 10R.

Very strange.

Well, the two main 15 rouble varieties are different enough as to be fairly easy to spot. I'm not so sure about the 10 rouble obverse varieties, although the nose does look different here ... and the rim is wider on one than the other. The rim might be partially hidden by the slab. The differences would be easier to see if the angle of lighting were consistent, which it isn't.

I'll try to post more scans from Kazakov when I have time. According to a review of Kazakov's book published in a recent issue of the "Journal of the Russian Numismatic Society", there are also different reverse varieties (the date, mostly) which Kazakov doesn't mention. I believe the review was written by the same Rylov who published the Rylov/Sobolin reference?
