i found via ebay that in the Netherlands some towns issue their own coins for special occasions

in 2006 in Leiden there were issued the Rembrandts: 1/2, 1 and 3 versions for 2. they circulated during this year in some shops in Leiden at value 1 Rembrandt=1 Euro
then in 2007 in Vlissingen they issued the Ruyters, again 5 types: 1/2, 1 and 3 x 2.

who's next, anyone knows?

ps: does anyone know other such coin emissions from holland or other country from the eurozone?

thanx!

As for "who's next" ... no idea. But since the KNM will, according to the current schedule, not issue any commemorative or collector coins this year, they may have to focus on such tokens even more.

This company http://www.muntpost.nl/ sells some of these "local issues" (Vlissingen, Leiden, Nijmegen, Utrecht, Den Haag, Alkmaar) - click on "Diverse uitgiften". And here http://www.xs4all.nl/~mthieu5/munten.htm is a brief article about them - scroll down to "Iets te vieren? Sla een munt!"

Many mints in Euroland make medals and tokens. Now whether those are used as "local cash", I don't know - probably not. In some cities/regions people can use complementary regional currency; but that a different economic concept, and they have primarily paper, not metal ...

Thanks for posting that Christian;

I would like the Rembrandt set, but of course the one I want is sold, but I also like the Utrecht Domkerk set, very attractive, and I have been in it. Have to play around there and brush my Dutch to see about ordering it.

Here are some more city "coins" from Muntpost's parent company: http://www.gemeentemunt.nl/ Have a look at the "Brunoon" made for Dokkum. And yes, those Utrecht pieces are nice too. One time when I was there I bought one of these Dommetjes ... as a souvenir only though. smile.gif

thanx for infos smile.gif

rembrandts are still available on ebay, ruyters too

i think that all 5 rembrandts can be bought for 20 euros, while for ruyters 15 euros is enough if you're a bit lucky
