Just wanted to know what happened to this one I found just today (btw, I got my camera to work biggrin.gif).....Look at the very top of the coin, the collar is kind of deformed.

LostDutchman
it looks like a nice cud.... it happens when the die breaks and parts fall away.... this lets the metal flow into this broken area and it results with what you have there.
Sandwich
Ah, I see...I've got another one I'm taking a picture of now.
Thanks.
Sandwich
Ok, I wanna see if anyone can spot this one. (The defective one is the one on the left wink.gif ).

PS: Sorry for the bad pic, my camera isn't great.
Sandwich
Nobody?
...I don't expect anyone to make it out from such a bad pic, so I'll just tell you what it is if nobody gives it a shot. lol
YeOldeCollector
Looks like the silver coloured insert has over-flown or come away from the brassy coloured outer circle?!? lol

In the bottom left of the left coin.
LostDutchman
i agree... not quite centered
Sandwich
Nope, that's just shine (again, sorry for the bad pic).

If you look closely on the harp on the 1st coin, on the left of the last 2 in 2002 there seems to be a feature that could've been caused by a die crack..?
If you look at the one on the right it's not there.
YeOldeCollector
Oh... All the legends are blurry due to the photo.
corkykile
Dunno either, but even in the blurriness it looks like those two harps are not the same.
Is there some sort of image under or over one harp that does not belong there?

Corky
YeOldeCollector
The edge of the harp on the left, right edge, is more solid than the left harp.
LostDutchman
hard to see... but i do see it... neat
Sandwich
I can see what you're saying about the edge...I examined to good coin and it appears to be a weak strike, that's why the edge of the defective one looks so sharp.
If you still can't find the defect, here it is...

That's a diechip. They are quite easy to find on Eurocoins.

Even big diebreaks are quite common on euro's than on other currencies.

Sandwich
Thanks....the 20C looks nice. What interests me is how the die could break so that the surface of where the die cracked is so even.
belg_jos
Well, that's quite easy to explain. That is the untouched part of the planchet, which is smooth across the whole surface.

Jos

I've never found an error coin in my change! sad.gif

Perhaps I should move to the continent? wink.gif
