A person found it with a metal detector and was wanting it ID so does anyone know what it is.

Surely British medieval (unless it's a copy): you can read CIVITAS on the reverse --followed by the city where it was minted, but I'm not familiar enough with these coins to read the name of the city.

I doubt that this is a genuine Edward Hammered penny. Possibly a 'Sterling' continental copy circulated in europe at the time. My reason? The Mint name just doesn't fit any English mint. Canterbury would be CANTOR and Chester CESTRIE. You also have NOVO CASTRI and CORCACIE (Newcastle & Cork ) As you can see the name on your coin is CIVI TAS CET N??
