It's a "Grosso" from Milano (Milan), definitely "pre-Sforza" (and pre-republic) but getting the correct duke will be a bit difficult...

(edit): the reference for this type of coins is: Elio BIAGGI, Monete e Zecche Medioevali Italiane dal sec. VIII al sec. XV, Torino, Edizioni Numismatiche Montenegro
...which i don't have, if someone can help LD further...

I think its from the Visconti family era (1395-1447), but it could be earlier than that... confused1.gif

Matt, you could send a pic to Bob Reis. He could probably help with attribution and would also make you an offer on it. He's reachable through his website:

I think your coin is a Grosso of 2 Soldi from Milan issued by Duke Filippo Maria Visconti (1412-1447)
According to "Medieval Coins in the Christian J. Thomsen Collection", by Kristian Erslev, Attic Books, 1992., p.133 & p.332

Catalog #1716 Obv.: FILIPV MARIA DVX MEDIOLANI 3C - Quartered shield of Milan and Visconti
