Hudson-Fulton Medal, by John Flanagan
70 mm Bronze Circle of Friends of the Medallion Issue 1, 1909

The circle of friends issued two medals a year housed in a book with accompanying text. I acquired this example in its original, well preserved book. The series was the first public subscription series of medals available in America and continued from 1909 to 1915. You can read more about them and review the entire checklist at the Medal Collectors of America website.

The medal was one of the first struck by the newly formed Medallic Art Company. John Flanagan. the sculptor, was recognized as one of the few American masters of the medal as a significant form of sculpture. If there is any doubt, the array of elements on the reverse worked into a scene that works should settle the question. Flanagan later designed the Wasshington quarter.

I hadn't been a fan of U.S. medals previously but more of these could change my mind. That's a sweet one Bill... bthumbsup.gif

It is a beautiful medal. I'm especially fond of the reverse with the skyline.
