Anybody going? Nov. 30 and Dec. 1&2? Maybe arrange a meet up? Coin Show
Scottishmoney
I sure wish they had stuff like that when I lived there. The Brown convention centre is a great place too, it is right across from where I used to work at Chevron Tower, Sometimes I could catch train shows in the evening after work.
Drusus
I do believe I will be there smile.gif
Mark Stilson
bthumbsup.gif As we get closer in on the date we can make a meeting point if interested. I believe theres a few others here from the area.
Scottishmoney
Well if things had gone like they should have this summer, I would be living back in East by Gawd Texas, but now maybe next summer. I lived there until 1997. And Houston Numismatic on Times Blvd was thee bomb back then. Lots of Saturdays and dollars were burned there.
ElleKitty
I will be there, along with some members of the Coin Clubs from San Antonio. smile.gif we're making it a day trip.
Mark Stilson
Sounds like you have a day picked. What day and we will see how it fits with everybody. For me it can be any day or maybe more then one.
ElleKitty
We'll be there all day long on Saturday, which I believe is December 1st.
edix2001
I'll be working as a volunteer on Thurs & Sat, and on Sun at 1pm I'll be giving a talk on US small dollar coins.
Capt-AWACS
Actually that is good to know! I should be flying home around 30 Nov, 1 Dec for a day or two. I will have to come by.

keep us in the loop!

Ciao,

So far looks like Saturday December 1 would be a good day to meet up. How about a time?
Capt-AWACS
Well I'll answer first, not that it is about team Capt AWACS but earlier would be better for me. I have reserve work to do that day and will be in uniform and have to leave and drive north no later than ~2ish

Ciao,
Tony aka Capt AWACS
Mark Stilson
I'm completely open to any time. Kitty, Edix time?
ElleKitty
I know we're leaving SA at five AM.. so we'll be there by the time the show opens, or not that much thereafter. Any time is good for me, really.
Mark Stilson
Just to toss up a time how about 11:00 am? Like I said I can be there at any time. Figured this might fit in with awacs and give folks a chance to make a run through to check out stuff first.
Capt-AWACS
works for me! Though I could go an hour or two either way if folks need it. Thanks for organising it Mark.

11 AM. Got it. *scribbles it down.* Now, WHERE do we meet? The Competition Exhibition tables? Near the Concessions? (Which I understand are astronomical in price. >< I'm taking my own.)
Mark Stilson
Food court sounds fine. We just have to figure out how to ID each other or something. How about on the name tag put Coin People?
Capt-AWACS
Okay 11am food court. I am guessing I will be the only one in Air Force dress blues, as I have reserve duty as soon as I leave. I might wear my leather jacket over but I will be hard to miss I think.

Looking forward to it.

11AM, food court. smile.gif I have no idea what I'll be wearing, but you'll probably notice the bright red messenger bag I carry, with TOYOTA embroidered on the front of it. biggrin.gif
Mark Stilson
I'll be the old, big, ugly, pony tailed hippie 1960-'s reject. If it is 81 that day I'll probably have on a black ZZ-top tee- shirt. I think that might stand out in the crowd. shok.gif grin.gif bleh.gif

Last call for any one else. If nothing else drop by for a look at the coins and to meet some fellow CP'ers.

11:00 am food court.

Just got back from the Coin show and meet a charming young lady ElleKitty and our dashing Capt-AWACS. Real nice meeting both. Wish I would have had a little more time there to chat, but I was time challenged.

Ended up with about a hundred still in pocket when leaving. Probably if I would have had more time that would have gone also. But it did not seem the coins were there. (At least none that stuck out. ) Picked up a baggy MS 1882 S morgan with crescent toning on the reverse. (Bargain bin stuff.) I already have the year and mint but I liked the toning. Picked up a low grade 1898 S morgan but I was missing that one from my set. And the last purchase just to catch up on my mint and proof sets for this year, a clad proof set, silver proof set, and a mint set. Pics will follow later today.

Missed Edix. May try to get back just long enough tomorrow to see his presentation. (Got the grandkids over so I'm not real sure on that though.)
Capt-AWACS
IT was great meeting ElleKitty and Mark! Again sorry I was late. I blame IH-10 laugh.gif

Thanks Mark, though I don't feel dashing, to much German beer has made me fat!!! Thankfully flight suits have velcro wink.gif

I hope to catch you guys again for more time to chat. I could really learn stuff from you guys.

Glad you left with a little cash! I got some biz cards from some currency dealers, but thankfully none took credit cards that day and saved me from bankruptcy...

See guys next time, and thanks for organising Mark.

I picked up some nice bargain bin deals there and half offs...most of the dealers were cool and rounded down.

I ended up with a few notgeld (there was only one guy who happened to have a book of them he bought) like the AACHEN 1 Grosche, city of danzig 10 pf coin, I got my 5 rupees from ceylon (only 2 or 3 people selling that one), I got a great Belgium 5 Fr. coin with Leopold II on it, I got an Italian 10 centesimi coin with Umberto I, and one 10 centesimi of Vittorio Emmanuelle II, A perfectly toned 10 Piastres from Egypt (1939), A swedish WWII Iron 5 Ore was a nice find in a book of half off coins... and a few others...all in all I didnt spend over 100 USD.

it was my first outing with my little baby and everyone was nice to her and she got her first coin (the state quarter they gave out at the door). It was a nice show all in all...so many morgans!!! Lot of US coin dealers, not near as many world coin dealers but between them they had most of the bases covered.

Lot of nice people there, dealers were all very nice...glad I went.
ElleKitty
I had a lovely time at the show, got some excellent bargains, met two wonderful CoinPeople; but at the same time the show felt a little sparse.

Picked up 5 Aussie Predecimal coins for my date set at a steal. The dealer had just acquired a large batch and didn't want to sort through all of them, so I walked with these five at 2 dollars a piece. One of them was worth about 50. I don't know if I should be happy or feel guilty!

Also got 15 of the Isle of Man cat crowns in Cu-Ni. A beautiful set I've always wanted, and now have -almost- completed. Still need 1994, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006. Oh, and 2008.

Picked up the 08 Kookaburra 1oz, it's beautiful as is expected from the Aussie bullion series. I saw literally millions of dollars worth of American gold, and probably tens of thousands in Mexican, but finding world bullion was unexpectedly difficult. Even Canadian Maples seemed to have fallen off the branches.

Finished the rounds, picked up a few more odds and ends. Got a nice Charles IIII 8 Reales of Spain with chopmarks on it for $30. I'm happy with it, and I'm sure it'll be in my Omnicoins gallery before the end of the day. biggrin.gif As will most of the rest of the things I picked up.

I had a brilliant time. Amusingly, I met both Mark and Cap'n on the floor. They were easily recognisable from their descriptions given above. I don't know what they thought about the strange lady walking up and asking them who they were, though. I was lovely to spend the half hour or so chatting together, and hope to meet more Coin Collectors at shows in the future.

My general opinion of the show was a disappointment. The crowd was small. I didn't run into or get run over by anyone. The deals that I found were utterly spectacular, but many of the dealers were packing up or had packed up because of the end of the Heritage Auction. The inventory wasn't available in World Coins. There were few dealers who had more than just the general run of the mill average common items. Mexico was extremely well represented, as well as four lovely dealers in ancients. I ended up doing business with the same dealers that come to the shows in San Antonio, anyway.
