The pictures are very small, so it is hard to be sure, but it looks like somehow 2 blanks got stuck to one another and were struck together.

I think I can see some edge reeding which looks continuous from one blank to the other.
LostDutchman
i dont think that is the case... the coins would be a lot more squished if 2 coins were struck together in the striking chamber.. id bet on a super glue job... are you sure the edge isnt supposed to look like this??? i know next to nothing about most world coins... but i have seen some pretty neat edges like this before.
Corina
I'm betting faked cause it just looks wrong

Here what the edge looks like

the pic is at 300x225

Weighs between 10 and 20 grams (less then 1 oz)

You're probably right. My ignorance regarding Indian coins knows no bounds.

I could have sworn the original post contained 3 small photos rather than 2. The one I was talking about seems to have disappeared, but I thought I saw at least one reed that extended from one coin part way onto the next, as if the two blanks had been struck together in the collar.
Corina
Most likely the angle that i shot the edge from cause the one reed to look like it extended from one coin part way onto the next

that's why i redid the third shot cause it wasn't helping in figuring out if the coin was fake or not just confusing the matter

Ok, thanks.

Do you see any sign of an adhesive (like superglue) at any location around the seam?
Corina
No signs of glue that i've been able to find even under a magnifying glass i can't find anything

I am pretty sure that is the normal edge for that coin. Let me dig up mine and I will snap a quick pic.

syzygy
Yep, that is the normal edge on the coin - ornate and irregular, really quite interesting.

Corina
Nice now i can say it's a poorly made coin

Here is the reason i thought it was fake

See in this pic a piece of the rim is missing, to me it looked like some one took a file or something and chipped that area off

Modern Indian coins quite frequently have flaws from cuds, die crack, weak strikes, and more. Quality control doesn't seem to be a big issue.

You shouldn't discount Shr-Lanka activists that keep making counterfeit Indian 5 Rupees coin to sabotage Indian economy...

While speculation is good, how exactly can you prove that Sri Lanka is actually counterfeiting these coins when metal prices are so absurdly high that it's more profitable to melt down such coins and actually make blades out of them? confused1.gif
MKerogazov
If I could prove it, I'm afraid, I wouldn't be with you today shok.gif

I smell some BS. Not only would there be no reason, but even if there were, it wouldn't be worth the time and effort. Besides, the only "activists" in Sri Lanka are the LTTE, and they would have even less of a reason to do this than the Sinhala majority!
