I found this quarter the other day at a local park. Normally, I would think, great! a quarter! but upon further inspection I noticed that it is put together like a sandwich. Looks like a copper slug, clad with a silver piece on the front and back.

Is this normal? Or is this a rarity?

I don't know alot about coins.

I included a "normal" quarter for reference.

Thanks

Welcome!! and very nice pics.

That is what happens to a clad coin that is put into a caustic environment. The copper goes first bwink.gif

Normal clad coins are made like this, they are sometimes called "sandwich" coins. As for yours having a flat rim, it was either ground off, what Becky said, or struck outside of the collar when minted.

i agree with becky... this coin was put in a caustic substance... you can see traces of the reeding on the silver part of the edge... sadly, not an error... but still cool lookin
