YeOldeCollector
Hey guys,

Thought that I'd show you a few of my latest purchases!

1915 Halfcrown of George V with a very attractive rainbow toning.

1935 Jubilee Crown 'Art Deco Rocking Horse'

James I Coin Weight

Superbly toned 1930 British Trade Dollar

Art
Very nice coins.
YeOldeCollector
Thank you Art!
Art
I really have to get one of those Trade Dollars. I just think they are the nicest design. I'm going to add it to my "goals" list for the remainder of 2007 and 2008. Maybe a nice Christmas present for myself.
YeOldeCollector
They are beautiful coins that are readily available at a reasonable price. This one only set me back about $20/£10.
Do you buy yourself X-Mas presents every year? ... tongue.gif

I usually do. My wife won't buy me anything to do with coins or any other current hobby/pastime. She's always afraid she'll get it wrong. This has been this way since we were first dating. On the other hand, I just forge right ahead and if she doesn't like/want what I get her, we return it and make a shopping/luncheon date out of it.
YeOldeCollector
Quite a good idea actually. No one in my family will buy me coins either, as you say, they are afraid they will get it wrong etc... The only coins they do get me sometimes are commemorative issues or proof sets, letting them roam the hammered coin market wouldn't be a good idea! laugh.gif
daggit
I definately like those smile.gif

Surrey....Hey we are neighbors bthumbsup.gif

Are we?

daggit
Just about... Abbotsford grin.gif
YeOldeCollector
Sorry, I don't know an Abbotsford. Neither does Google Maps ohmy.gif Apart from Canada...
Graikos
This half crown is beautiful... what toning. Looking forward to more of your coins! smile.gif
YeOldeCollector
Thanks Demetrios. It has to be picked out in a certain light but I fell in love with it on eBay!

All the best,
Clive.
AnemicOak
Love the 1915 Halfcrown, beautiful. bthumbsup.gif

Awesome catches, YOC!

I'm always astonished by the dates of those coins and that we know who minted them and where!
YeOldeCollector
Amazing, something nearly a thousand years old can be pinpointed within a few years of mintage, where and who hammered it.

Two more hammereds on their way to me:

Henry I - Cut Half. Quadrilateral-on-cross-fleury Type. Spink Ref# 1276
Reads RO]DBERT O[N CANP. Robert at Canterbury.
Quite rare to turn up in any condition, my only other Henry I is an unrecorded combination of mint, type and moneyer.

Then a Henry III Penny, Jacob of Norwich. A mint to push me closer to completion of my mint run.
Spink Ref# 1361
Not very good photos, will improve when coin arrives.

That's all for today!

All the best,
Clive.

YOC, do you ever go metal detecting or ever find one of these nice artifacts in the ground?
YeOldeCollector
May I ask what YOC is?

I do go metal detecting but never find anything like these coins, just musket balls, bullets and modern coinage that is worthless.

YeOldeCollector
Ohhhhh... lol
It makes sense now, thanks sbvenman! bthumbsup.gif

Nice newbies for your collection. Love the histories behind the British hammered. Sometime I want to go through my English stuff that I have not looked at and done anything with in years. I collected them pretty avidly until years ago, then got into the Scottish. I sold some, but still kept a few pennies from Henry III, and Edward I, II, and III because of the more interesting mints I had accumulated.
YeOldeCollector
I'm going for a mint run of Henry III Long-cross, so if you ever want to sell some message me. I'll be more than happy to take them off you hands!

I agree, so much history belongs to such small things.

I have an Alexander III penny and the odd turner.

Art
Great additions. What history these have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
geordie
Mint runs of the Plantagenet era are my bag too, but I'm staying with those of Edward Ist at the moment. Trouble is, as you progress, the types you need dry up and become very expensive! Serves us right for taking up numismatics tongue.gif
Graikos
Nice additions there, Clive! smile.gif I can see why you like hammered ones.
YeOldeCollector
Thanks Demetrios!!

I like them but my bank probably doesn't tongue.gif

I will send you one hammered coin sometime soon mate, don't you worry!

All the best,
Clive.
YeOldeCollector
The postie was good to me today!!! grin.gif

The Henry I ha'penny as a better photo, the previous photo has disappeared...

And a 1788 Anglesey Halfpenny. I just like the druid...

All for now folks! But fear not as more are yet to come!

That was my problem with the English hammered, I never wanted anything from London or Canterbury, but rather King's Norton, or Ecclesiastical mints in Durham and York. My oldest Ecclesiastical coins are actually from Northumbria:

Archbishop Wigmund of York ca. 837-854 AD

I like the Ecclesiastical coins because they were issued by the Church and not the government, very fascinating.

Similar story here, London and Canterbury are too common and so I like the provincial and ecclesiastical mints.

Henry VII Half-groat of York of Archbishop Savage. Not an appropriate name for an archbishop but a nice coin nonetheless.

Maybe I am, maybe I'm not... hehehe

Is the what appears to be the numeral III on the coin his regnal number as I suspect? I have never seen them on coins before about Richard III.
YeOldeCollector
HENRICUS REX III = King Henry III

I study latin so it is a great help with my hammereds! bthumbsup.gif
geordie
Wasn't he the first to 'number' himself? cool.gif
YeOldeCollector
I believe so. There ware so many individual names for kings before Henry III i.e. Egbert, Hardicnut etc... that they didn't have to number their coins.
YeOldeCollector
Purchased this today, a Tealby/Cross and Crosslet penny that is nearly on a full flan.
Looks to be a class F of Ipswich, this coin dates to circa 1176 a.d.

Will get more info and better photos, and post in Virtual British Coin Museum, when I receive the coin.

My other Tealbies are struck completely off centre, halves or quarters. This one being an exception for once lol!

All the best,
Clive.

Nice coin, clive. Where do you find a market to sell/buy these?
