What I wonder is not what so much is going to happen to gold and silver, but where is the money going from the stock market, oil market, metals etc?
LostDutchman
Aug 16 2007, 05:43 PM
they might be beating up the silver and gold market to buy it cheaper with that money...
Scottishmoney
Aug 16 2007, 05:58 PM
Well the bad news for buyers of gold and silver is that it went down, unless you had the good fortune to buy in when it was much lower. The good news if there is a bright spot, oil spot prices for Brent crude are now $70 a barrel, which is the lowest it has been in a while, and may go much lower, because the demand is just not there.
The reason I think everything is going down like it is, people want to pull their money out of everything and see what gives, and then it will come back in somewhere.

So sorry new window seller, canna sell the stuff I was going to pay for them with, because the price tanked. So the window market gets clobbered too

A lot of this was started by the leveraged hedge funds sitting with mortgage related debt that they can't sell for any price, and when they get a margin call they need to raise cash fast, and start selling stocks, metals, commodities and anything else not nailed down. Once they start it, then everyone else panics and we get a rush to the exits like we see today.
As for $150 gold Dustin, the last time it was that cheap, I was in second grade and not a big gold buyer on my 50-cent weekly allowance!

Aug 16 2007, 06:51 PM
50-cents wasn't very good, a coke cost 20 cents (though you got a nickel back for returning the bottle), same as a candy bar. Needless to say I could save up for something, or get a treat once a week, but that was about it.
BigCanadianM

That's a very useful web page Ken, thanks for sharing.
As for the actual prices and whatnot being all over the place, I could care less. The only thing that would annoy me is if silver went over $16 an ounce again, and gold hit $700 again. I collect coins for coins, not what they are made out of, if I had a collection of aluminum coins I would be just as happy, in fact I really like those! But I also make jewelry, and that is the only place that precious metal prices really hurt, it's hard to sell a ring for $200 when there is $175 in gold in it, so to me, the lower the better. Fine art jewelry for the most part doesn't relate at all to the value of the metal, I made a series of silver rings and the asking price was $325, while the actual metal value was only about $50 or so. ( I make really HEAVY rings too )

I think silver is going to make a big jump one day. Copper was 1.35 a pound 2 years ago. 1 year and 6 months ago it jumped to 3.75. I dont know what it is now. I would guess 2.95. I sold 214 puonds of copper when it was $3.50 a pound.

You can call it a game or call it a gamble but everything we do is based on cycles and while raw metal may move up and down very quickly we will find collectable coins move in a much slower cycle. A very quick huge drop would put numerous local dealers out of business in an instant. Been that way all my life and I see no reason for it to change now.

Silver jumped to $80 an Ounce in Dec. 1979. That must have been a great year for some people. I think it went from $15 to $80 in a year.
