Art
If you're just starting look at some of the lots available from dealers and on ebay. I've always found bags of world coins by weight at coin shows and at our local auctions. I think world coins are a gas to collect. Have fun.

labmom
I agree with Art. If you are just starting out, look for bulk lots of mixed coins on eBay. You can usually get a decent variety at a decent price for the more common coins.

Depending on how big a quanity you want to start with here are a few that sell 22 pound(10 kilo) bags

Not bad $5.90/lb and $6/lb in large lots. I may try them next time I'm up for a bulk lot. I like to get from different sources as I find you get a different mixture. I just bought another bulk lot from a place I had dealt with previously, but mainly because it was a pretty good mix at a great price. I figured it was worth a second shot.

Does the Bundesbank really sell the world coins to people, or does worldcoin.org just use their bags? I mean, what would I have to do to buy bags full of coins like that at the Bundesbank?

I think I gotta ring them up tomorrow.

Tell me what you find out. I'd love to get my hands on one of those bags.

I don't know that the bank sells directly to people; but I am certain that they do sell their bags. When Germany converted to the Euro, the banks collected the outdated coins from all the Union countries, to exchange them for Euros. The bags contain a truly remarkable mix of coins, though the majority of the coins are common, circulated, and you find the same dates repeatedly. Still, it's worthwhile if you are just starting a Darkside collection. There are some really interesting coins hiding in those bags, if you feel like taking the chance.

The unopened bags are far better, even at the $130 pricetag, than the smaller lots. A sealed bag is less likely to have been searched through. [wink.gif]

The latter, I think. Those bags were, and maybe still are, used for transporting coins from commercial banks to the Bundesbank. Here is an example (not my auction) of such a "filled" bag, complete with bank tag and all:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...em=120147948786
The bags are kind of common; you can buy them (usually filled with destroyed paper money) from various places. The store at the Bundesbank's Money Museum in Frankfurt also sells such bags; a tad pricy though ...

That would be nice! But I doubt you can simply buy the empty bags at Bundesbank branch offices ...

Christian, who is talking about empty bags! I am on the prowl for full ones! evilbanana.gif But if you think that worldcoin.org is just "repackaging" their coins and not actually buying directly from the Bundesbank... I just wish I knew where they are buying from.

Right, before I post this, I better call them.

[... 2 minutes later ...]

The Bundesbank does not sell directly. They will call me back though to let me know if I can buy from somewhere else. So... I'll be back. smile.gif Let's see how long it takes.
Brett
I'm not sure if they are stil buying them anymore. I believe when the change over to the Euro, companies were purchasing huge lots of these. Most companies have sold off all they had, thats why only a few places still offer them. I bought a 10 kilo bag back about 3 years ago off of ebay. At the time there must have been about 30 places to buy full bags from. At the time there was a website that was selling amounts all the way up to 1,000 kilos. But I haven't been able to find many places still selling full bags
Graikos
Well, the Bundesbank sends their coins to another company. This company is sorting the coins according to countries and then sends it to their national banks. Some of the stuff that is quite old, they keep (because apparently the banks don't know what to do with them) and after they have sorted out the raw materials they want to keep, they give the coins to coin dealers. Now, because the raw material prices are going up, the coin dealers are getting less and less coins. And because this company doesn't want to make these sellers even unhappier than they are, they can't really sell directly. My telephone nr. and email will be sent to their biggest coin dealer, but dunno what will happen from then on.

Now, to worldcoin.org. It is highly doubtful that they buy directly from the Bundesbank, cause BB sends the coins to that company of theirs under the premise that they will be processed and transfered to their country of origin.

I just really wish I knew where they get their coins from. Grrrrrr.
Drusus
I bought a Bundesbank bag full of world coins...a pound...got some cool old coins...circulated and there were some repeats (of coin type not coin and date). Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Swiss, Spain, Some Eastern European...dates ranged from 1950+ on the whole.

a Darkside collection

Could someone help me out with the meaning of this phrase? Never seen that on German forums.
banivechi
For Americans, the "darkside" is all the rest of the World. Imperialist, self-sufficient definition. hysterical.gif (the big W from "world" was put intentionally...)
Maybe this deffinition was done by some of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCoVaeYHzWA
Graikos
Oh my... I am on the darkside? shok.gif

Thank you for the explanation. I think I will continue calling this a world coin collection. smile.gif

same as graikos tongue.gif eheheheh but "dark side" does sound nice xD lol

Well, they were playing with clichés or stereotypes. I think that somebody who provides correct answers would not be shown in those videos, hehe. But who knows ... Keep in mind that here in CoinPeople you deal with knowledgeable and well-educated people only, from all over the world. grin.gif

i know that it was edited an stuff tongue.gif or they where paid to say it cause trust me if ppl where kept on tv like that with out knowing they will sue the person tongue.gif
Drusus
Yeah...one could easily make the same video in pretty much any country and stereotype everyone by those who you pick and choose to put in the mix. That video is pretty transparent in is objective. Funny all the same...

PS...american here but one who has never used the term 'dark side' in any non star wars conversation. They are world coins and pretty damn interesting...IMO far more interesting and diverse than american coins that, save for a few examples, have never impressed me much.

In fact this is not shocking... I've tried some time ago to put the finger into a blank map of Africa over Mali... and I failed! You can indicate where is Tadjikistan? Are you sure that is not Turkmenistan? diablo.gif We laugh here when popstars salute the Romanian public with: Hello Budapest! and they are in Bucharest...
Or... Israel is in Asia or Africa? I assure you that you can be a great scientist (except history or geography) without knowing that... and always you can learn more. This is the point: to be open to learn everyday something new.

roaddevil
tongue.gif actually i know where Turkmenistan is cause i was a delegate in our model un training for it tongue.gif but yea i get ur pic i dont know where Tadjikistan is grin.gif an yea it can happen in any country 2
Graikos
The best way to learn is by playing games! smile.gif

You can pick the other continents as well if you get bored of... old Europe! grin.gif
Drusus
thats real cool...I guess I know eurpean countries rather well...I slipped up a bit on the eastern european and ex soviety states...on the name the country I missed Slovenia, Belarus, and Estonia only smile.gif Probably would have gotten those if I had slowed down...I did a bit worse on capitals sad.gif

I am going to bookmark that site for my child.
roaddevil
nice tongue.gif but same as drusus i have a prob with ex soviety states only tongue.gif smile.gif they r 2 many xD
Graikos
I was fine in Europe, but Africa (especially west, east and south) just killed me. So many states...

There is something new on the horizon concerning buying world coins.

The guy that buys most of the coins from that company that deals with them on behalf of the Bundesbank wrote to me. I asked him to give me the "worst case scenario"... pricelist, meaning for 1 kg for example. From out emails I can imagine that he can make better prices for larger quantities. Thus 1 kg that has been not searched at all costs 6.5 euros. For a kg that has been looked through by himself it would be 4.6 euros and for the "normal ebay" quality (as he called it) it would be 4.20 euros. I guess that means that other customers (he probably has a normal shop as well) took a look at those lots. Bear in mind that the coins have been searched for raw materials by the other company before, so silver will be rare. Then again... in lots it mostly is. In that sense this will be actually a darkside thing, cause you put your hand in a dark hole and hope to get a prize. He told me that the chances for something good are low in a 1 kg bag and that he would recommend 20 kg so that one does not get disappointed. I am not really looking for treasures tho, every coin is a treasure, right? (poetic? hysterical.gif ) The age of the coins varies from the 1900s to today.

Shipping conditions are the costs that DPD asks for.

I told him that I don't like being a middleman, so I would make it possible for people that are interested to contact him directly. But for that I have to see if anyone IS interested at all and then get the OK from him to make a direct contact possible (He hasn't replied to that yet. I will not ask him for an OK every time someone gets interested. He will hopefully give me the OK once and the I can pm his email to anyone who is interested). So, I would rather not be a collector of orders. First I don't have the time and second, I want you to make the deals you want with him. It is none of my business what you do or order. bwink.gif Just be nice to him. That's all I ask. smile.gif If you do want to make group orders, lets say for some of the US guys and girls here, that's fine by me. As I said... I just want to give you his email and then you are free to go and buy everything off him. smile.gif

So, that was the result of my search. I will make a small order in the near future, but please don't wait for my results. I got little time on my hands for sorting out coins at the moment and till November and it would take forever. Also, please let me know if this offer interests you, so I can give him some feedback and get his OK.

One last information. This guy sells 20 TONS of coins a year! So, start your engines! smile.gif
BigCanadianM
I would be extremely interested!

send em 2 me grin.gif

anyway i will but not right now tongue.gif sometime in sept may be smile.gif
Topher
I'm interested. 20kg is a lot, so if any Canadians want to split a larger shipment, I'd be happy to go in on a bulk purchase.
BigCanadianM
We'll talk smile.gif
Graikos
20 kg is not the amount he needs you to order btw. Basically all he said was, that the chances for something good increase the more you buy. That is pretty logical. So it is only his recommendation.

Ok, I'll wait till tomorrow (my time) see what gathers up here and then let him know and ask him again for his permission to give his email around. And then you are free to buy your pockets dry. smile.gif I know I am being overcautious, but I wanted to give him a good amount of interested people so he can maybe do something about the prices for all of us.

@BigCanadianM

The coins you don't want, you can either try to sell on ebay (maybe as a lot) or maybe you can give them to a bank like the Bundesbank, that could then change them for you. I think the Bundesbank is offering this service in Germany. Dunno for sure tho. I still have all my doubles and unwanted coins... but I plan on trying to sell them on ebay.
Topher
As for the doubles and unwanted coins - I trade them with others, or give them away. I still have lots of extras, with more on the way, so one of these days, I'll get around to ebaying them in lots. I don't need to make a lot of money on them, but what I do make I can reinvest in more coins for the collection.
Drusus
When I buy bulk lots of world coins I give away the doubles...the lots I bought did have silver in them but the silver coins were in terrible shape...I buy a pound at a time...I could see problems with buying bulk lots with other people when it comes time to split the load smile.gif If this is just a matter of us all buying a few pounds together but we are each sent separate lots from the seller...I would be in on it if the price is cheaper per pound....
Graikos
Right, I will let him know about you three that are interested and ask him to give you his email. Maybe you can then get together with other people and make a collective order.

Don't know if he would agree with your idea, Drusus. I'll ask him tomorrow. If he would, that would be great. smile.gif

I am really curious about the quality of the bulk. It probably would be wise to keep the first order to a minimum so we can check exactly that.

agreed 1/2 pound isnt a lot of coins but might give one a sampling of what the person is selling...
BigCanadianM
Any news?
Graikos
Sorry, but no. I only managed to write to him today, as I had my girlfriend here over for an extented weekend. I do apologize! sorry.gif

Hey, you're doing us a favor! smile.gif Hope you and your girlfriend had a good time!!
Thanks again smile.gif

I would be interested also.
Graikos
Hello.

I just wanted to let you know that my order arrived today. From now on I will slowly be showing some of the highlights (coins I like, maybe the occasional valuable etc). You can find this here. I will be calling this lot BBLot there, just so you can see what came out of it! smile.gif

See you around then.

For buying bulk lots of world coins I like Black Mountain Coins (http://www.blackmountaincoins.com/c/BMC/BULK-WORLD-COINS.html), they sell bulk bags up to 25 Lb.
That and e-bay, but I haven’t found e-bay to be that great a bargain lately.
Art
Lots of world coins can be tons of fun. I once bough a $50 cent bag full of mixed world coins at the FUN Show. It was a great treasure trove. Most ended up going to the Boy Scout troop for the kids' merit badges. I did keep quite a few nice coins from it.

Ebay unsure.gif
ElleKitty
Yes, eBay is a great place for finding lots of world coins, cheap. But be careful. There are a lot of people out there just selling their culls for some quick cash. Take the time to look at several of these world auctions! Compare prices to how many pounds/kilos they are willing to send you. Use a little common sense, and you should do fine. smile.gif
Graikos
Ah, I completely forgot to mention something. If you want to tell the guy that you got his address of me, my name is Demetrios.
NumisMattic2200
If you scan the lots on ebay you can often find odd little gems that pay for the whole lot in themselves. Try looking at lots being sold by non-collectors as they don't care so much as to what they might be giving away. Of course, the only problem now is, which coins are worth more than the average and I'm afraid this takes knowledge and maybe a decent price guide.
