The Spanish parliament will discuss a bill this week that proposes equal representation of men and women on the country's circulation coins. Currently the "small" pieces (1, 2, 5 cent) show the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the "medium" coins (10, 20, 50 cent) show the author Miguel de Cervantes, and the €1 and €2 pieces have king Juan Carlos.

According to the PSOE proposal, women should be depicted on the coins as well. Their first choice would be Clara Campoamor who fought for equal voting rights which were introduced 75 years ago. Here is an article in Spanish: http://www.elpais.com/articulo/espana/muje...elpepunac_3/Tes

Hehe ... well, I did not actually ask for it. (I'm all for equal opportunities, but there may be measures which make more sense.) Anyway, the Spanish parliament just approved the plan.

So all Congreso members voted for the bill, except the PP members (they abstained). And thus, as from 2009, there will also be women on the Spanish circulation coins ...
