Is it really an inverted trial / essay / experimental note as stated in Spink Auction. It looks more like an error note than a trial, experimental....

That's a strange one.

I can't imagine it would be a trial, why would they bother creating non-inverted plates to print this? I don't even think it's an error because of that. My guess is someone was messing around at the BEP (if it existed then) and had this thing created.

I can't believe that the estimate is only £ 300-500!!!!

Just make it easier for your eyes, here is the original and reverse one.

I can't imagine how it would have occurred accidentally, and yes, the BEP has been printing US Currency since the 19th century, so this would have been all on them!
