hrm. i thought it was against the rules to have portraits (at least under the wahhabi interpretation of islam).

Unless it is the King, then it is alright apparently. They relaxed this rule several note series ago - apparently after the 1960's.
I think it is interesting that they have King Abdulaziz on the 500 Riyal note, but the current King on all the rest.

I can't see any new design or formatting changes between these new ones and the earlier Saudi Arabia series of banknotes. If nobody have told me that these are the new series banknotes, I would not have notice.
