Yes another thread by me biggrin.gif I obviously have nothing better to do today

This time a simple poll, which of the three above crowns has your favourite George & the Dragon design. The Spink Patina George V design, the 1933 official design of George V or the 1951 George VI design.

I personally think the 1933 George V design is the best, I love the simplicity of the design, especially of the dragon.

What do you guys think?

The Spink version

Drusus
gonna have to go with the classic 51
AuldFartte
Pistrucci's.

(I think that's who designed the '51)
Johnny 1989
Well, not suprised that the 1951 coin is winning so far. Was this the design they also used for the Soverign for many a year?
Scottishmoney
It was used for the sovereign and the Crown from 1817 onwards.
echizento
I'd have to say the 51 also.

Knew I had seen it somewhere before biggrin.gif

51 but the Spink would only work in copper in my opinion.

I am for the '33.

It was actually issued in 1935 not 33. I too quite like it, the only thing that puts me off and George V himself commented "A damned bad rider", but the design was still approved so he couldn't have hated it.
It is also sometimes referred to as the "rocking horse" Crown. It was designed by Percy Metcalfe.
It is a unique design and I have also got one in my collection.

Pistrucci's St. George and the dragon in my view is the best. Look at the quality of the engraving, the details in the muscles etc...

Interesting so it took them a while to release it then?

See it's the style of the horse and dragon that make it my favourite, just it's simplicity which was quite rare for the time, especially as back in those days alot of coins have quite a bit of detail.

I do like the 1951 & Spink Patina as well but it's the unqiue design that make sit my favourite biggrin.gif

I voted for the 1951 design

I vote with Pistrucci. This is his original 1816 version that he was forced to modify.

Cant answer the modify question but can the spink one,

Spink make the British Coin catalogue every year and also hold coin auctions, etc. They made a series of patterns known as the "Spink Patina Collection" in 1999-2001 in response to cancelled plans by the Royal Mint who were originally going to do a "20th Century Monarch's" coin series featuring profiles of Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI & Elizabeth II

See My Webpage for more info on Spink biggrin.gif

Cool! Thanks! biggrin.gif

It seems that the powers to be were somewhat displeased with the left or rein hand and its
proximity to a certain part of the anatomy. Please keep in mind the model was naked as he posed.
BigCanadianM
I see...perhaps they where right :S
Thanks!

spink!!
Doogy
i'm biased, as i say the Pistrucci George and Dragon design is the most beautiful reverse of any coin coin ever produced. I love the GB Crowns using this reverse design!
geordie
For me, the Pistrucci harks back to the days of craftsmenship and pride. The others seem to be trying to be 'hip' and 'contemporary' . Schoolboy doodlings! cool.gif

1951 Pistrucci's St. George and the dragon by far. Guess that is why I love collecting sovereigns and half sovereigns!
