In two weeks, a new GEL 200 banknote will enter circulation. The banknote, which depicts Sokhumi on one side and a renowned Georgian freedom fighter on the other, was unveiled at the National Bank of Georgia last Saturday. New security features and high-quality printing make it totally unique. The banknote was developed in collaboration with German specialists, Giesecke & Devrient

The ceremony was attended by President Saakashvili, President of the National Bank of Georgia Roman Gotsiridze, representatives of Giesecke & Devrient and the banknote's designers, Bachana and Nodar Malazonia.

Walter Shlebuh, director of Giesecke & Devrient, who came specially for the unveiling, underlined the banknote's security features, "The new GEL 200 banknote was printed by Giesecke & Devrient, and is one of the most secure banknotes in the world. Several exclusive technological novelties are used in the banknote."

darn...I was hoping they'd keep the same design theme as the existing notes. I really liked them.

Yes, those are neat. But apparently the new note is supposed to have a political message:

The reverse side has a picture of the breakaway Abkhaz capital, Sokhumi, and the words "Sokhumi, Abkhazia" in three languages-Abkhaz, English and Georgian

i just learned something new. this site has a specimen set showing the georgian 500-lari note. i had no idea it even existed!

it's too bad it's only used in financial transfers. i'd want a hologrammed 500 note to match the 50 and 100, since the 200 looks more like the beginning of a new design series.
