Hi all,

I am very new to the coin game and thought I would get some advice here. I just bought 2 coins from a yard sale and was wondering if they were worth anything.

The first is a 1853 Liberty Gold Dollar coin and the second is some type of Canadian giant copper penny. I paid 5 dollars for both and was wondering if it was worth it?

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks

If you bought anything gold (if its real) for $5 you got a steal.
Pictures would be needed to verify anything.

Could you post us some pictures?

What year is the Canadian penny? The last several years (1916-1920) tend to be fairly common, and unless it is in excellent shape, not worth a whole lot. If it pre-dates 1900, then the value tends to go up. But this is just a generality. Post pics, or worst-case scenario, give us a year on the Canadian penny.

The Canadian coin is about an inch wide and has what looks like spartan holding a trident on one side, and Queen Elizabeth on the other side. I don't have my camera with me and couldn't find pictures. Oh ya, the coin is from 1967. I know it's not old, but I have never seen a canadian coin like it.

The US gold dollar looks like this...

I have seen a million different values for this type of coin, so it's all pretty confusing.

Not Canadian. Great Britian.

And this?

1853 Liberty Head dollar is the highest mintage of the series unless it has a mint mark below the wreath.
Still worth at least $150. (If its real)

Please post a pic of the reverse of the smaller coin!!!

Thanks Dock,

You have the exact pics of the coins except the dollar coin says 1853 and not 52.

I did some checking and there were just over 4 million prints of the dollar coin. The other, I have no idea. If you gys could shed some light, that would be fantastic.

Baalfyre, welcome to coinpeople. hi.gif

You see, it is pointless to talk about any value unless you can show what you got there. Chances are because there are so many counterfeits out there in the market, the current value is nothing unless you can show some kind of pictures.

It is not recommanded that you show pictures off from the net because that doesn't mean anything of your coin other than it looks similar.

Look at it like this. For $5, regardless of real or not you did great. Even counterfeit coins are now selling at many coin shows and not cheap. Of course that depends on the artistic abilities of the counterfeiter. If real, worth many, many times what you paid. As to real or not real so much depends on where you bought them. If in a large city, populated area, from average looking people, good chance they are fakes or one of them is. If in a small town area, from basically older people, better chance they are real. If you have any coin shows around you or know where there are some, take them there to see what people say. If you take them to the average coin store, you may hear almost anything.
Myself, I've found my greatest deals in coins at garage/yard sales. Many, many times much better than coin stores, hobby shops, coin shows, ebay, etc. Hope your coins are real, if not you still made out OK.
