Wow, I have never ever seen one of those pesos that wasn't worn and discoloured heavily from circulation. That coin brings a new appreciation of a coin series that I previously thought unattractive.

mines not quite as nice...

Yes, I have a few. They are some of the finest and reasonably priced hunks of silver around!

Mexico has a fair amount of interesting coins as they have to keep up designing new ones thanks to inflation and instability.

Well, that photo of the 0.100 fine peso convinced me I needed a nice one, so I picked one up at the local show today, unfortunately I couldn't just buy one as the 1943s were calling me!

I really like that "Caballito" design also. If you get around to some shows check out a really high quality MS example - I'd love to get one.

Hello, fellow Mexico coin lovers. My name is Roman and I have 10 Mexican coins that I would like to post, with your permission. I am a collector of mainly War of Independence and Colonial time periods of Mexican history, but have some early Republican Cap'N'Rays...

Can I post smile.gif ?

P.S. This forum has some neat smilies! bhyper.gif evilbanana.gif bhyper.gif banana.gif yahoo.gif

Thanks, guys. Gxseries - I like your icon. That proof Soviet 150 Roubles has to be platinum or palladium, since at that time silver commems were in the 1-5 Rouble face value.

Here are some of my Mexicans. I wouldn't go into early colonial stuff (cobs, pillars, portraits), but start with my favorite area - War of Independence:

This is a double-counterstamped issue, using the same punch as KM#289, except with a 1 Reale host, instead of 2 Reales listed in Krause:

IPB Image

My first coin from Durango Mint was this 181(2) 8 Reales.

IPB Image

Which piqued my interest in the early years of this mint and led to my next acquisition - 1815 Durango 8 Reales. Specific Gravity is a little high on this coin, making me believe that another, heavier metal, was mixed with silver to create the alloy, which happened often during the War times:

IPB Image

This next piece is another double-counterstamped issue with Morelos and Chilpaz stamps. The host coin is a cast 1809 8 Reales.

IPB Image

My all-time favorite is this Gadalajara 8 Reales from 1814. It's so crude - it's beautiful smile.gif

IPB Image

Out of Republican coinage - I'll just post a couple of Cap'N'Rays:

1826 Zacatecas Mint:

1843 Mexico City Mint:

1849 San Lois Potosi Mint:

Yikes! Yes I do have questions - where on earth do you find such hot coins? shok.gif
Two Kopeiki
Weirdly enough - most came from small, local coin shows in Ontario. There are a few eBay purchases, but only from trustworthy sellers, since it's a heavily-counterfeit area.

Uh oh, I think if you collect the Mexicans, perhaps we will call you Dos Centavos grin.gif
Two Kopeiki
Dos Centavos does have a nice ring to it, however, as a Russian, I must stick to my motherland currency smile.gif

It just doesn't support Cyrillic usernames ie Україна Двi , so mine had to be changed sorry.gif At least we speak right language here at home, with Ukr words slipping in where they are easier.

No that would be odin centavo, no plural. Proper "Spasian" is that. hysterical.gif
Two Kopeiki
I might consider becoming Dos Pesos, at some point, since the 1921 pictured in this post with the Nike on it is my most favorite design on Mexican coinage.

Scottishmoney, you're Ukrainian? I've spent quite a few years living in Zaporozhye. bthumbsup.gif

Your a central Northerner, cannot imagine living in that Arctic wilderness up there. For me I prefer the gentle warm breezes of the Dnestr where the Chornoye More laps against the sifting sands and civilisation in Europe began. Paradise on earth.

I know what you mean - I've spent quite a few summers on the Black Sea... It's gorgeous...

I would move back there in heartbeat, but while rest of us live easy there, my better half doesn't speak the language and not like it there.

So here's a question. What would you call this coin? What's the value, and what's an estimated date?
Two Kopeiki
Those are pretty good questions, So and So. I've started asking myself those when I first acquired it and was looking to authenticate the counterstamp. I've contacted a number of Mexican Colonial experts and Don Canaparo from Hawaii had this to say:

QUOTE
hello, looked at the photo. i was wondering what you needed to know about this. i'm familiar with the c/s's on 1 & 2 reales. this eagle c/s of course also appears on 8 reales and actually is S.C.M.J. in full. i'm assuming your example 's c/s's are struck and therefore genuine. the most common accompanying c/s for the eagle of this type is the ornate M.d.S. i personally doubt the C.M.S. c/s from the same period. the eagle i believe is a war of independence era c/s as is the M.d.S., the C.M.S. appears more modern, a hacienda or municipal in the same region and later period perhaps? as always it's hard to say conclusively about that. i hope this helps in some way. sincerely-don

So, I guess we can't date the host, since it's so worn. But S.C.M. counterstamp appears to be dated 1811-1824 (War of Independence). As far as denomination - I would go with 1 Reale.

Thanks Two Kopeiki, that's actually one of my newer purchases, I absolutely love it. I also really like the newer onza coins with the multi eagle reverse, a beautiful coin if you've ever seen one. I'll try to get a pic up later.

It's a nice, tiny little coin. Did you get it from North East Numismatics, by any chance? I believe I saw a couple of graded examples on their site a few months back...
