What design elements should we examine on the pillar-and-globe dollar to determine the grade from Extremely Fine through Good? I believe one element is the degree to which the "plus ultra" is readable. I believe other design element are the florets beside the shield -- if details are intact, the coin is EF; if details are partially worn, (VF); if worn smooth (F) -- and the jewels at the bottom of the crown. The lines of the shield seem to be raised enough to protect the lions and castles from wear and cannot reliably be used to determine grade. I have not seen a pillar-and-globe dollar offered in less than VF, and therefore cannot determine how to determne grades Good through Fine. Thanks for any suggestions.
