HI I have a
Constantine Follis Two bound captives type
320 A.D.
Trier Mint.
RIC 254 rarety of R4

I was wondering if anyone could give me a current value for the coin?
thanks.
Victor
I would say this coin is in the $40 range. There are many factors though. It is an r4, but the VIRTVS-EXERCIT series as a whole is not rare at all. Generally it is only specialists that look for the assorted field marks. It would also depend on where it was sold. On E-bay it might get less, or more if two people decide to fight over it (which happens all too often!). On V-coins this type for Constantine from various mints runs the gamut from $25 to $155 (it is an extremely sharp example with silvering though).

Hi,

According to my information,,

http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/virtvs-exerciti.xls (Excel)

Constantine I CONSTA-NTINVS AVG HC VIRTVS-EXERCIT PTR * Trier RIC VII Trier 254 var r5 follis 320

.. this coin is R5 not R4. In this quality you won't find it for 40. I think something in the direction of $ 60-70 is more fair.

very nice constantine coin hussulo

Thanks its actually nicer in hand the scans are quite low quality.
Drusus
well, from the scan I can tell it still has much of its finer details and is well struck. I used to not be so fond of constantine coins but through the years I have developed an affinity.

Me too, Drusus -- after specializing in Julio-Claudians for many years.

I have to say compared to julio claudian coins...still they dont compare..but they are interesting for other reasons and there are some impressive examples that show real artistry. smile.gif

The exergue on the coin in question looks to be dot PTR, which would mean RIC VII Trier 254. In the footnotes of RIC, a coin is mentioned without a dot, but Hussulo's coin seems to have the dot.

Hi Victor. Sorry I am not very knowledgeable on roman coin varieties and do not have any RIC reference. It does appear to have a dot before PTR. What does this mean exactly?

It means that you had it right at first as RIC 254 rarity of R4, but like I said originally, the VIRTVS-EXERCIT series as a whole is not rare at all, so the r4 doesn't mean a lot. There are about a dozen variations (different mint mark, obverse legends etc.) of these coins for Constantine from Trier, and all are rated as rare, so all together not rare at all.

Ok. Thanks Victor.
