SANTA FE — All four final designs being considered for the back of the New Mexico commemorative quarter, due out next year, feature a Zia symbol over an outline of the state.

New Mexico Coin Commission administrator Arif Khan said the U.S. Mint should give technical feedback on the proposed designs next month, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported Tuesday.

I had no idea what a Zia symbol was, so I looked it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zia

I'd like their designs a little better without the state map thing. But the Zia symbol certainly says New Mexico to anyone who has ever been there.

Proposals for the "tails" side of the quarter included a UFO flying over Shiprock, chile ristras, roadrunners, hot-air balloons, even the mushroom cloud from the atomic bomb test at Trinity site.

The Zia symbol, Khan said, was the most common suggestion.
