WASHINGTON — Coin collectors dreading the end of the 50-state quarter program next year may get a temporary reprieve.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., introduced legislation Wednesday that would extend the popular state quarter program to add coins honoring Washington, D.C., as well as American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Similar bills have passed the House of Representatives four times before stalling in the Senate.

Mid-way through the Presidents and First Ladies issues they should do a dime circulating commemorative of countries of the world starting with our allies on 900 fine silver planchets and ending with the avis of evil type countries on plastic.

This is becoming an annual thing. Passes the house, dies in the Senate. None of these places have represantation in the senate so theres no incentive for the Senate to pass it. The only chance it has is if it can get tacked onto another bill the way the 2009 cents and Buffalo Gold got added to the President dollar coin bill.

Won't work. They change their friends and foes too quickly.
Apart from that, well, I don't think that extending the SQ program would actually be a good idea. With the possible exception of the D.C., a "state quarter" series should not include territories which are not states.

Just maybe this time something will happen.
I have read several lawmakers opinions that These coins should be added but it hasn't been a priority because they had plenty of time.
Time is running out.

Just more useless crap to clutter up the albums and rip people off on that marvelous "Coin Collector" conspiracy...

Cities! Thatis' the follow-on for SQs. Each city with a population of 12500 or more gets to design their own quarter. The Mint will issue 24 per year until each city has had it's turn. Cities will go in Alphabetical order within their states - round robbin like until each state has issued one. Think of the size of the albums for that.

Or maybe the next theme could be useless politicians. We could do over 500 different coins per year and have enough for a 100-year program.
