hey guys and gals. here we have a pretty cool half cent with a neat double struck reverse. It appears another planchet was in the way on the obverse leaving the reverse double struck.

Is there any chance that these are recent manufactured double strikes? Someone makes a die from the reverse of the already undoubled coin and then strikes it again producing these pieces.

Just wondering.

there is always this chance with some of these coins. I like this particular piece as an authentic double strike. For just this reason I don't usually buy large cent and half cent errors that aren't in a slab. But I have seen a few good fakes and was able to study them... one of them was in a slab smile.gif A lot of the early double strikes are uniface.. or partially uniface. It had something to do with the planchets and how they were fed into and out of the early presses. If I remember right It may have been by hand but I don't remember for sure.
