Hello!

Does anyone has a picture of 1818 Rouble Variety with closed "2" to show
and how it is different from open "2"?

Good day, janneen.

I do not have pictures of Rubles but illustrated how should opened "2" and closed "2" look like.

Thank you for your answer. One more question: Are these varieties mentioned in Conros (my is 2004) cataloque? In my Conros there are two varietes for these kind of coins (with these mint- and minmaster's marks), but the text is in Russian which is not familiar to me. The other variety seems to be more common (120$ and 40$ in VF, I think my coin is better, XF). Do these refer to closed and open "2"s?

Thank You

I'm not too sure but yours doesn't seem like a closed one there Janneen.

Dear Janne,

Your coin is with closed "2". This is original coin, struck in that year. The rare coin is a Novodel with Opened "2".

So your coin is not the rare Novodel, but just business strike variety.

If you have full version of 2004 Conros (6-th edition) then 1818 Novodel is listed on page 122 of the catalogue and regular business strikes, total 4 varieties for that year (including the one you have) are listed on page 22. The difference between rare and common varieties of two business strikes with mintmaster initials "PC" is in the size of crown above the double headed eagle. Variety with small size crown is scarce, and with bigger size crown is common. But you did not provide complete picture of obverse of your coin so I can not tell what variety that you have.

Happy Holidays,

It seem to be a regular strike and common variety. But still a nice historical coin to put into collection.

Best regards,
