Full Version: Easy way to rewrap coins?

As many of you know I've been searching through $25 boxes of cents (found 3 wheat cents today). Well I'm looking to move up from $25 boxes to $50 bags or two boxes at a time.

Short of child labor, are there any easy ways to rewrap coins? Counting 50, rewrap, count 50, rewrap....gets a tad bit boring.

I wish I could just use a CoinStar type of machine but my bank doesn't have that option. Plus the CoinStar gift cards suck.

Ask around at different local banks, some have coin counting machines and might not charge you to turn the coins in.

I didn't know that. 90% of the banks around here are only one type, Key Bank. You can't drive a few blocks without being near one.

I HATE getting boxes that have those shotgun type rolls. You have to rip the things apart and then go back to the bank and ask for more wrappers. mad.gif They look at you like you're an idiot for asking for 100 cent wrappers. "Oh you mean pennies?"

You mean something like this?

I had something like that but it never worked right. Always jammed or just plain missed the wrapper.

I have taken a plastic coin tube, counted the 50 coins in it, and then scratched where they top out at. Then it is a simple matter to drop the unwanted pennies into it and roll them from it.

This doesn't stop the inconvenience of having to beg for wrappers but it does cut down on the counting.

I picked up a set of tubes, similar to this:IPB Image

Got them at K-Mart, think it was about $10 for the set. There is a slot at the right height, just fill the tube, shake a little, and let the overages slide out the tube. If you have new wrappers, you can just slide them down inside the tube, invert, and voila!

All of my banks save a couple of them have coin counting machines that I dump the little darlings into. They charge non customers a percentage, something like 5% or so. If I had to rewrap them I don't think I would search through coins, just too much trouble.

The only caution I have on these is with wrapping older coins, because of wear, the counts may be off a bit, and you could actually end up wrapping 51 cents or 53 dimes etc. I found that out the hard way when I used the cent one for wrapping up 5,000 wheat cents I bought many years ago and then boxed. About a week ago I got them out and on counting the rolls I came up usually with 51 or so because of the wear on the older coins.

I'll see if I can find those like Kuhli mentioned.

If not, I got a family activity for us to do over Christmas. smile.gif

Also found this one from Staples.

If you think that's bad, consider that you get a lesser count with higher relief coins than with lower ones. Using a standard size (Canadian) plastic roll, on average US (pre-90s) quarters are about 35 to a roll. Pennies also tended to be short a few as well. sad.gif

Yes, take it to the bank and have them put it through the change machine. First Banks do it free of charge and hand over your cash. No need for wrapping.
