Special coins that are minted strictly to collectors, or sometimes out to the public because of some special occasion, such as the anniversary of some events. smile.gif

Here in Euroland the former ("to collectors") are called, surprise, collector(s) coins :-) The others ("to the public") are commemorative coins.

<brag>
Oh, and I finally managed to take a picture of the coins and sets that I got in the past couple of days. The image is a bit large (about 800 K), so I'll just post the link here:

Gut gemacht, Christian

One remark: AT 60 Jahre zweite Republik, you've got that coin raw? Mine is in a nice folder in a blister with all kinds of info on it, in both english and german.

Actually I got two of those. One came raw from a fellow collector who got them from an Austrian bank, I think. The other one - in the picture - is from a folder like the one you got. But I am known to be a "Pappenkiller" (except when it comes to proof coins) anyway: Down with folders and blisters, freedom for coins! biggrin.gif

Christian
Trantor_3
hehe, same here grin.gif

was still thinking on how to free it without damaging either the coin or the pappe.

Did you cut it out using a sharp knife?

Or simply tear the cardboard?
tabbs
In many cases I throw the folders away. Will probably not do that with the Dutch/Canadian "60 years of liberation" set or the annual set from San Marino. But as for those Austrian single-coin folders, I usually open them without actually tearing them apart. (Sometimes I keep the folder for a while, to take notes later, or because some other collector may want it.) The "glue" inside can be removed pretty easily ...

Christian
Ray
Very nice Christian, did you go to a coin show to pick these up all at once?
tabbs
Weeelll, not really all at one time :-) Yours went into my collection a little while ago, but after that, new stuff simply ended somewhere on or near my desk during the past couple of days. The ones from the UK and Iceland I bought at a local coin store, the others came in the mail ...

While I was reading your messages I couldn't resist to post one of the strangest "coins" that I've seen: Somalia $1 2004 with the shape of a guitar blink.gif

Wow, very nice acquisitions :-) The two 500 forint coins (King Matthew) look just great! What is interesting, by the way, is that what is depicted on the coins spans across various countries nowadays. The statue of the king on a horse is in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The inscription on the monument used to say "Matthew King of Hungary" but now it's only "King Matthew" - just like on the coin ...

http://harmen.de/ungarn/klausenburg/kla18.jpg

The side with the face value of the second coin is a little ho-hum, but the other side is gorgeous. The upper veduta shows Ofen or Buda (now the right bank part of central Budapest), the one below shows Vienna that Matthew conquered and where he resided during his last years ...

That 1000 forint coin is interesting because of the Parliament Building "silhouette". Other than that, well. (Still much better than your current avatar and title though tongue.gif )

I did quite like these designs, most times on Forints the denom side is pretty plain, I do like when they get creative with the font though. Thanks again for the nice historical info.

And as for your last comment. bleh.gif A little crude comedy is a good thing sometimes. bwink.gif

As I know, The Hungarian King Mathias (in Romanian language Matei Corvin) was half Romanian, half Hungarian... I saw the statue from your link very often this year, and in 3 of October I will see it again ( I will be there at a coin show in Cluj).
About Buda citadel... I have hundreds of photos there, even the photo from my profile is taken there... :-)

Could well be that Mathias was partly Romanian, and I suppose anyway that for him being king and ruler of a large empire was more important than the question of nationality. He even ruled over parts of what today is Germany. I remember that, on a trip to Budapest, we learned about a Mathias monument in Buda that is supposed to be fairly authentic, and I was quite surprised to hear that pretty much the same monument can be found in a town in Saxony. Good luck with your coin "hunting" in Cluj! :-)

Considering that it's a colored (ugh) coin, it is not all that bad. tongue.gif Certainly better than the French "Fairy Tales" series for example.

This is one of the oldest commemorative ruble minted in Russia that I have:

user posted image
Mintage of just 15,000

Old commemoratives that were minted in Russia before 1917 often have a mintage less than 300,000 except for the Nicholai II 300th Anniversary of Romanovs, with mintage of 1.5 million.
banivechi
Past week, the National Bank of Romania issued a 5 Lei silver coin commemorating an actor, Birlic, but the mintage was 150 pieces. From the initial price of 120 Lei (40$), actual price exploded to 300Euros (360$). One good reason to not collecting commems, as long as I am not "in touch" with some bank presidents...
