I've stumbled upon possibilities at the Bochum Uni and at the Hellweg museum Unna to see some medieval German coins on exhibit in NRW. Does anyone happen to know of any other good places to visit? Maybe in Paderborn or Hoexter as I will probably need to go there anyway.
The major German-language "Münzkabinett" collections - Vienna, Berlin, Dresden - are not exactly close to where you plan to go.

Here in North Rhine Westphalia there is a state collection/Münzkabinett in Bonn and another one in Münster:

Seems there is a coin collection in the City History Museum:
