Checking the Redbook...the issues overlapped (silver - 1851-1873, nickel - 1865-1889), but... check out the mintages...
For silver, from 1865-1873, less than 56,000 total.
For nickel, from 1865-1873, about 28 million total.
So, yeh, they kept making some of the silvers, but I guess they figured out nobody could find them since they are so small
