ANR recently auctioned an 1867 proof set that had spent its early life in the cornerstone of building in Massachussets from 1867 until the 1960s. Beautiful coins, an interesting story, and the price - WOW!

WOWZERS! Actually that's a great price for these coins. The pf67 3-cent silver alone is about $9000. A stunning set.

I'd better not see those in real life, I probably drool all over them....

Can anybode here explain why there's two different 3 cent pieces in that set? Were both circulating in those days?

Checking the Redbook...the issues overlapped (silver - 1851-1873, nickel - 1865-1889), but... check out the mintages...

For silver, from 1865-1873, less than 56,000 total.
For nickel, from 1865-1873, about 28 million total.

So, yeh, they kept making some of the silvers, but I guess they figured out nobody could find them since they are so small blink.gif
