The football great George Best is to feature on a million bank notes being issued in Northern Ireland next month to mark the first anniversary of his death.
Wait for an American to come along and suggest Mike Ditka or someone else from the wrong sport.

I'd rather see Bobby Moore on a note!
Aetheling,Bobby Moore was an English footballer, not an Ulster one.George Best was one of the most famous footballers ever to have come out of Ulster.
I'd laugh if Ireland ever issued a Euro coin with Roy Keane depicted on it.If they did,I would want it for my own collection.
Still,I am hoping to get one of these Ulster 5 Quid notes.
Aidan.

That i am aware of. Although if the Bank of England can put Scotsmen on Banknotes...
Anyhow my comment was less about what country the footballer was from but more what they did for the sport. I find it passing strange that George Best who's career as a premier footballer was fairly brief gets himself on a note, whilst other players that had longer careers go by the by. Maybe the Bank of England should do something about it? Breath, i wouldn't hold though.

If we have George Best on one side of the note, shouldn't we have a bar on the other?

Exactly. George Best is more famous as an alcoholic than as a footballer. Then again what are the Irish stereotyped for?

Which is why they are commemorating him. All the alcoholics will buy these up like the golf nuts in the USA buying up the RBS Jack Nicklaus notes.
The notes won't be available until November 27, and they are expected to sell out.
