I hear there are 3 different variations for the 2006 Canadian nickels. Any indication on weather one is going to be more scarce than the others?

So far I've only got a few, but it's pretty even between the steel "P" and the "no-P" c/n. No mintmarked coins except for quarters so far.

For the year of 2006 there are three different variteies for nickels. There is the new Portrait, new Portrait Plated and the New portrait with the new Mint Mark(mint Logo).

I've found the no-P variety to be the hardest to find. Plenty of the other two, though.

the no 'p' nickle is the lowest minted out of all 3

What does the P stand for?

P = plated steel. Costs much less to manufacture than the zinc coins.

What does that new mintmark that looks like the RCM logo stand for? I actually saw it on a 2006 cent the other day, but of course I promptly spent it.

The new mintmark is the Canadian Mint's logo. It will be replacing the "P" mintmark on Canadian coins. My understanding is that the original "P" mintmark was to show the world that the Winterpeg facility can produce high quality plated steel coins at a low cost. That's why they mint coins for many foreign countries there.

Funny thing is, I save older Canadian coins when I get them in circulation, ie GVI and early QEII cents, but the newer steel stuff has no appeal. I did save the Provincial and the Millenium 25¢ when I got them though.

I still save the Geo VI and early QEII coins as well. There's just something about them that makes them look and feel like coins. Some of the newer coins just don't give me the same impression.

And the good news is you may be able to exchange them on a 1-1 basis before the end of the year.
