MS 66 Morgan dollar from 1881. The guy claims is has a book value of 16,500 but is selling it for $280. Makes me wonder if its a fake.....

If it was in fact graded by PCGS, then yes the book value would be close to $16,500.

The problem lies in that it is graded by SGS. Their grading is notorious for being "not so good". If you've ever seen a SGS graded coin in person, you'll know what I mean. At most it may be a 62....that's a reach.

When you see a "deal", it's much more likely the item in question doesn't exist rather than it being counterfeit.

In the case of this coin, I agree with Burks here, it's not that the coin is fake, or not there, it's that the coin is graded by the SGS grading company. If you had heritage coin quality photos of it, I'm sure you wouldn't even be able to get a MS-63 out of it.
