Igor - that is a shocking news. I might have a ruble that is similar to that. I will post more pictures to ask for your opinions later.

Timofei: I agree that an edge inscription would be interesting. As well as, is that copper ruble a modern counterfeit? It seems to be awfully perfect in many sense!

Timofei - Sorry, no pictures of the edge. I mailed the coin back immidiately. From memory it looked very flat with letters slightly buldging towards the middle.

What did not you like on the coins? The first one you posted I did not like too, but the other two are difficult to judge to be fakes just based on the pictures. Surely, one has to hold a coin in the hands. So, what was the problem on those 3 coins?

The other two coins I did not hold in my hands either.
The pictures were emailed to me by very knowledgable guys.
If you will compare both 1725 roubles, you will see that they are identical.
I am just sharing the information. It is not easy to describe what exactly is wrong, but a picture is worth a thousand words .

It is perfect. Personally, I am inclined to believe it is newly cut fake. However the edge is just breathtaking. Some years ago it was discovered a hoard of seaman roubles, each one had razor-sharp details probably MS-67 to the modern grading standards, but this copper artifact - is the best I ever seen.

However, it might be of course a novodel, a so called ukaz coin or whatever, but i think chances are small.

Any ideas? Anybody?

Timofei, I was reading this and thought of this again and decided to read Uzdenikov again. While it does seem that silver coins were restruck as novodels later on copper planchets, I do not see 1725 on there. It's on pg 314 on my book in second edition.

I was thinking that it might be a novodel since the quality is just shockingly superior - I haven't seen many counterfeits that are anywhere close it (but I guess it may be a matter of time).

Since you said it was found a hoard of such seaman rubles, was this on a news somewhere or you happened to be the lucky one? If so, I would like to hear it if possible
