Hi guys,

Today I got another interesting coin:

Interesting because I have not seen before such misstrikes (in this case, double-strike) on Siberian coins. Do you have any Siberian coins with errors? Are they common or in Siberia coins were struck properly? smile.gif

Greetings,

kisenish

Greetings,
kisenish

These coins were struck on a screw press and the planchet was sometimes off-center when struck the first time. Such coins are not all that rare and it just depended on the inspectors at the mint. If the coin was too badly struck (or double struck) they might put it in the bin for melting but it is more likely that such pieces were just allowed to go into dailly use. Double-struck pieces appear in coinages from other countries, the U.S. for example.

I believe mistrikes were more common back then, at least more common in circulation, as the cost of remanufacturing the coin was too much for a mint to bear. I have several early errors, including even an ancient one.

The mint at Kolyvan was out in the then hinterlands and I am not surprised to see an error from there.

I had seen this coin earlier, wish I wasn't on the short spending leash or I would have liked it for my Siberian collection.

errors were much more common from back then. the quality control back then was non existant

Hi kisenish, congratulations, I have seen quite some Siberian 10kop but I do not remember to have seen as severe a double strike as this one. I specialize in the big coppers, of the Siberian 10kop I have 14 diff. dates (including the 1774) but I was close to bidding because of the charme of this coin. You got it cheap!!! Welcome to Cologne! I moved away but still going there often. Kölle Alaaf! Regards, Sigi

Congradulations Kisenish! It is often easy to say "oh such errors are plentiful" but when one tries to get one, it is often VERY difficult to do so.

I personally don't think it's TOO common as I haven't seen too many of these, in fact, even less double striked coin as such. It's probably much easier to find offstriked Siberian coins, or mass issues.

That's a really neat coin.

Congratulations! bthumbsup.gif
