Boy, do I love silver certs!
Tegwin
Where do I get information on what Coin/Note shows are happening around the world. Obviously I am more interested in shows in the UK as they are easier (and chepaer) to get to.

Also I recently returned from Vacation to Southern Africa, and I went to Zimbabwe while I was there. The currency has gone to pot in that part of the world now, that they have resorted to using bearer cheques instead of real notes. The OFFICIAL government exchange rate is Z$250 = USD1

I have attached a copy of the Z$1000 note which is about US$4.00. The wired thing about the money, is that they have a Z$1 note as well... cant buy much with that at allIPB Image
Aidan Work
Chris,Zimbabwe has got Bearer Cheques as low as 1 Cent. The 1c. to 50c. values are on paper that was left over from when the $500 notes were printed at the end of 2001 (or 2003,according to an unconfirmed report). The $1 Bearer Cheque is significant,as it is the first time that Zimbabwe has ever had a $1 note.

I have got all of the new Zimbabwean Bearer Cheques, except for the $10,000 & $100,000 ones.I can guess that I will have to wait until next year's Pick catalogue comes out.The prices that some vendors on eBay want for these 3 notes (including the 2 types of the $10,000) is absolutely ridiculous.

New Zealand 1968 54c. on 5/- British postal order (4c. on 4d. poundage change). Issued at Wellington on the 19th of December 1968 & paid at Wellington on the 29th of November 1978. No counterfoil.

Can you post a pic of the Ghana note? If I remember the last Popular Note Comp correctly, some Ghana notes did well.
Aidan Work
I am sorry.I cannot post photos,as I don't yet have either a scanner or a digital camera. The Ghanaian banknote is pictured in the latest Pick catalogue.I think it has the catalogue reference of P5.Can anyone please confirm?

I just collect whatever I can get. I am going for the "collect the world in banknotes", I think it would be fun to have a banknote from every country in the world. Preferably the whole set like £5, £10, £20, £50 in the case of the UK

Aidan Work
Chris,I found trying to collect the world far too difficult, which is why I now specialise in the British Commonwealth, including Ireland,Zimbabwe,& Somaliland, but not Cameroon or Mozambique (which are foreign countries that should never have been allowed to join up in the first place).

You'll be pleased to know that from later on this year,England will be issuing a banknote depicting Adam Smith on it.Who would believe it - a Scotsman depicted on an English banknote.By the way, only 3 countries of the U.K. are issuing notes.Wales stopped issuing notes in around the mid 1970's.Scotland & Ulster are still issuing their own notes.Cornwall also had their own notes for a short time as well.

I really like the story about this Portugal note although it is a bit confusing when I first read it. I will put this into my website under the article with both the article and the link to the orginal article.

Is there any other good story relating to banknotes ? smile.gif

Interesting $100 note, never seen one with a side portrait before bthumbsup.gif

excellent notes! i especially like the reverse of that c-note. it's notes like these that are getting me to focus my collection a lot more to the u.s. side as opposed to the rest of world. i'm slowly crossing over...maybe temporarily, maybe not. grin.gif

as for display recommendations, i've been using fotki.com. i found it several years ago and liked it so much i decided to upgrade my free account to a paid one. it lets me show public photo galleries, password-protected galleries, and hidden private galleries. with unlimited account space, i loaded my entire collection to the public area and use my private area to host pictures for use other websites...like my avatar and signature bar. they also just added a new feature allowing for video.
http://public.fotki.com/sanmiguel/world_banknotes/

another popular site i've seen in use is flickr. i've never used them, so i can't really comment on their features. but from what i've seen....it looks pretty snazzy! bthumbsup.gif

I guess some weekend when I have some spare time I'll look into those San Miguel. The $100 is the only FRN with a profile image of Franklin, and although these are still available, they are getting a bit harder to find without major problems (this one has one pinhole on the margin). And yes, the large size FRNs had some of the best designs the BEP has ever produced!

maybe it's his keyboard/computer. u.s. keyboards are defaulted to show the '$' symbol, korean pc's show the won,and japanese show the yen. makes sense that a british one shows the pound. wink.gif

to use a different symbol than the default, you'd have to look up the code, like alt + 0163. sometimes i get lazy and just write out 'pounds' or 'euro' rather than look up the code. grin.gif

Today I drove down to a coin show about an hour away ( they don't have too many in NH) and i got the following

Australia Unc 5, 10 and 20 dollar polymer notes (P51-53)
1946 Hungary 10,000 Milpengo (P126)
Madagascar 5,000 Francs (P78)
1975 Rhodesia $10 (P33B)

and a complete set of UNC New Zealand banknotes from 1992-1993 (the $5,10,20, 50 and 100) all with the same serial numbers AA000625

and all of it was just under $200 biggrin.gif

But someone in Wales indeed did issue banknotes beginning in the late 1960's:

Indeed, Peter Symes has a whole treatise of them on his site:

Black Sheep Company of Wales

BTW, look at the rest of his site. It can be addictive, and you may have to come back to it. He has written a number of books, many of which are for sale on his site also - especially on British banknotes.

I am expecting a whole set of 1960's-1980's Chinese notes, a Spanish 100 Pesetas from 1925, and now a set of Suriname notes. Images to follow as soon as they arrive.

I think that it is long overdue for the Black Sheep notes to be listed in Pick,as they did have the backing of the British Board of Trade at the time that they were issued.

I recently bought in 2 Trinidad & Tobago $1 banknotes,of which one depicts our Queen's portrait. The other is from the 2002 issue.

I have also bought in 2 Jamaican $1 banknotes & a Jamaican $10 banknote.

Another note I picked up was the 1982 50 Tambala from Malawi depicting Hastings K. Banda, who was a dictator in his own right.
