I like coins with holes in them. What a fantastic sign that this coin was special to someone and saw use beyond "normal" commerce.

Normally I hate to see a hole drilled in a coin, but I have one I like anyways.
Square nail hole probably put in near the date minted and put in some ones house for luck.

I have read somewhere that in the 19th century large cents were often centre holed and used as washers.

Actually buttons moreso than a washer. I have several that have two small holes were it would have been attached to a shirt or pants or something of the sort. My dad has found many while at Native American artifact digs, ussually a half penny from overseas, on occasion an indian head cent or a shield nickel though. I use some silver 3 cent coins that were punched in this manner on my Plains style regalia in place of shell disks.
