Hello. I recently received an 1888 Japan 1/2 coin with what appear to be 2 mounting holes in it at 10 and 2 o'clock.

Is this coin worth anything. It's not something that I would keep and would like to sell it to a fellow on Ebay but I have no idea of a fair price.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

OUCH two mounted holes? sad.gif

I'm not too sure if it's a rare date (Meiji 21 I suppose?), but I really doubt it is worth a fair amount sad.gif

Welcome to coinpeople by the way.

Yes two holes. I will post a photo when I get home to scan it. I also have a 5 Yang coin that has a different reverse side than what should be there. I find that very odd too. I'll post photos of that too.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply!!!

AH. If your 5 yang coin doesn't look anything like this,

It's TOO likely that you have a counterfeit.

Nevertheless, do post some pictures. smile.gif

OK well I can't upload pix to this forum because the interface requires a static IP address and my system uses dynamic addresses. Although I'd be willing to email the photos of both coins to whomever might be able to lend any assistance.

The front of my 5 Yang looks like yours but the back has Japanese symbol for the number 1 (ichi) and a completely different symbol underneath. The wreath and the flower at the top are identical though.

That is not a problem. You can open a free account at http://www.imageshack.us and upload as much pictures as you like, as long as they don't exceed 1.5mb smile.gif

I am seriously doubting the authenticity of the 5 yang coin that you have. It is rare coin in Korea and usually if you find it in VF, the asking mininum price would be 3 grand+.

Ok lets try this. Here (hopefully) is my fraudulent Yang.

The first picture is the back of the coin but it's upside down...sorry.

So...fake?

Thanks

As for my poor little 1/2 sen with holes and it's value...

Thanks to gxseries for the imageshack tip. I really appreciate that.

I expect the damage on this coin is too great to make it worth anything but I figure it never hurts to ask.

Thanks again!

I'm afraid the 5 yang coin is definately a counterfeit. If you noticed, the character at the reverse is not 1 "yang" as you thought, but it is 1 whan, which is an exceeding rare denomination. About 77 pieces were spared from melt down and if you can find one, try 5 digit figure to start with.

Now about that 1/2 sen, I'm not too sure of it's rarity, but who knows what the buyer knows. It might be one of the few pieces to complete his type set, which means it could be a scarce date, but I don't have a Krause to confirm this.

I hope someone else will come to this post and post the mintage figure. smile.gif
