How much do you spend on coins per month average? Is that a budget? If so do you go over the budget often?

I don't have any set limits. But I'm sure I spend at least $200 or more a month, except this month and the next few gotta save for vacation. laugh.gif

A couple hundred also. It can go up some according to the amount of overtime I work. I don't burn up the entire amount but figure part of it as a "treat". Been slow buying the last week or so just because if time. Been too busy running.

Also saving a little for a quick run to the casinos in Louisiana this weekend. Seeing Little Richard there.

I don't have a set budget. What I do is take part of my quarterly bonuses and any reimbursable travel expense checks and put that in my coin stash. If I see something nice and I have enough I'll buy.

Also I like to save up for the bigger coin shows, one coming up in Sept in Orlando.

No set budget. Some months maybe $20-30 and some months $100 so the average is about $50 a month. Would like to spend more but just can't afford it since they cut out all of our overtime at work. sad.gif
Vfox
When I'm in school and can't work as often I spend about $30-$50 a week on coins, but over the summer, like now, I spend about $50-$120 a week. So on average $120-300ish a month. On occasion (such as Christmas or B-days) when I have a little extra to splurge, I'll maybe buy a nice type coin, which is about my entire months budget, if not more (if im lucky) hehe. bthumbsup.gif One thing I love about this site is the ability to trade coins without being shafted, it's nice to be able to trade a coin for something else you want and not have to break open the wallet! grin.gif

Mine is kinda on and off. I can get myself really dry and when I see one that I really one... well I blow a fair amount when that happens. grin.gif

IF, and I mean IF I can stay on budget, I spend about $100 a month. But 4 out of the last 6 months I have more than doubled that. This month is actually looking like a good candidate to stay on budget, but there is still time for me to blow it, which will probably happen. I am working today, which is my normal day off, so that is some extra OT money that I can spend. I have a few things I am eyeing on eBay, so I will probably splurge some this week-end.
syzygy
Never too much. I always respect my comfort zone - if I didn't, I would have a much nicer collection smile.gif

My current budget is zero. Normally I try to stay in the $75-100 per month range and that includes books and publications. When I was getting some of the Large Cent and Half Cent books -- oooow that hurt.

Most of the coins that I really want now require multi-month savings for the lowest price stuff. Multi=year for the rest.
elverno
On average about $200-250 a month though I've been well under that the past six months. No particular reason except perhaps re-photoing my collection. It's almost like collecting them again! smile.gif

I have been out of a job since May 24 so the total amount that I have spent on coins in that time is $1.00
Burks
Before March: About $75-$100.
After March: About $10-$25

Started back into my other hobby of fish keeping. Three tanks already with a fourth being set up this weekend (shrimp breeder = money).

I usually allow myself one purchase a week. Almost always $20 or less. My guess for this year is about $50 a month.

Have to admit, this is a great post!

I set aside $80 a month in cash, and when I have $500 or $600, off to the local coin store I go. Inbetween, if I see something I like (which is usually under $100 an item) I PayPal for it using my credit union savings.
But there is a big show coming up in Saint Louis in May of next year that I am saving for. I hope to have $2k or $3k to take with me to that one.

I don't have a budget, i wouldn't stick to one if i did. If i have the money and i like the coin i'll buy it. If i don't then i don't.
Hussulo
Probably about $350-$550 a month, but if there are no coins I like I won't buy. Sometimes I will spend more if there are certain coins I want.

Same for me, it totally depends on the coin or situation. Sometimes I'll go months without buying something because the only specimens on offer are low grade junk.
AuldFartte
Well, I used to try to stay on a budget, but that worked quite poorly. I was shooting for about $250 to $350 per month, and I might have stayed "in budget" for one or two months.

Then I decided to just buy whatever I felt like, the only budget question being "how much can I get away with before the wife notices?". Yeah, that went over real well sorry.gif

Now, I don't have a budget, and I also don't buy coins very often anymore. I still love collecting, but I have become more limited in my pursuits, and, when I can afford it, I only buy higher quality coins with, IMHO, "eye appeal" (it has to appeal to my eye wink.gif ) Since higher quality coins have become quite expensive, I find myself unable to get a lot of coins. So I have a new (well, renewed, I guess) hobby - Photography. It's cheaper, too biggrin.gif
jlueke
I try to save about $200 per month but then spend it at one or two shows.
Under $20 purchases fill the gaps. Hence the birth year set
jello_g
No particular budget. But if I see myself spending more than usual, I try to offset it by selling off some of my traders to even out the cashflow.

That's very true. Although in my case it's just whatever coins i am inclined towards are just not available.

Way Way too much biggrin.gif

Did you go? I hear it was a super show.

My output of money for coins varies massively. There are numerous coin shows, coin shops, hobby stores with coins and flea markets full of coin dealers and I go to mostly all of them. There are many times when I spend nothing and many times when I spend way to much. Example is last Sunday at a coin show I blew over $2,000 on just 2 coins. Many times like today I went to a coin show and a flea market with coin dealers and spent nothing.
scoutjim99
I have gone several months with out purchasing and Once i have spent around 2000 in a month but as a whole i do not have a budget and MAybe 50-75 a month
ccg
Not working right now, so <$20. Even most of that is actually from trading in stuff I no longer have an interest in.
jlueke
Since most of the coins and medals I am actively looking for are under $100 and fairly scarce I'm just buying them as I find them.

Ah Art, the CSNS in Saint Louis. Well, it was great. Now you have to temper that
with the fact that I have only been to the local Springfield coin show in the past,
so this was my first experience at any kind of a regional show. But it was for me,
a success.
I was able to meet several WINS members there: Joe Garbarini, of Maryland Heights,
Missouri, WINS #9, David Noble, of Saint Louis, Missouri, WINS #204, Ray Larson,
of Nevada, Iowa, WINS #20, John Mundwiller, of South Saint Louis, WINS #525,
Meir Sapir, of Tel Aviv, Israel, WINS #588, John Baumgart, of Chicago, Illinois,
WINS #???, Jason Craton, of Seattle, Washington, WINS #5. It was a great time to meet
everyone and talk about our favorite subject… food! No, wait, numismatic related of
course. But Joe did put on a great reception on Thursday evening that did include great
food and good drink, but soft and hard.
I was able to pick up some coins, a 1916-D Winged Liberty Head dime, a 1913 and
1931 Bust Half and a fourth issue fractional currency 50 cent with Lincoln portrait.
So I did good.
The show was in the convention center attached to the sports arena where the Saint Louis
Rams play football, so even though it is downtown, right near the Mississippi river, it is
easy to find and get in and out of. My Garmin GPS unit came in very handy for navigating
the streets of Saint Louis.
There is a script show in Saint Louis in the fall that I plan on attending, but that will be out
by the airport in the Hilton convention center.
So overall, Central States was a very good experience for me. Plan on going back.

I don't have a budget. Because I would not stick to it if I had one. If I have the money and I like the coin or need it to file a slot in an album i'll buy it. So far this month I have spent close to $700.00. Some months I spend more some months I spend less.
dustin43160
well since i go to school and have a job i try to spend atleast 70% of my check on coins usually wheaties and silver!!!
Vfox
My budget this year has shrank quite a bit, but I am still able to get some killer items now and then for cheap. I spend about $20 a week on average right now, but since summer has started again I will hopefully be able to budget in $50 a week. But then again I have a lot more bills this summer, and the PA state grant was cut off because I've used it for 4 years already, so I need to save a bit more. At this rate, it's buy what I like, when I see it, IF I can afford it. laugh.gif
slowly but surely
This thread sucks! wink.gif

It made me actually add up in my head how much I'd spent on coins this month and it was WAY higher than I had imagined... Willful ignorance is bliss. What the heck though, birthday and graduation this month = reason to splurge!
scoutjim99
Sometimes ignorance is Bliss biggrin.gif untill the bills show up, and then it is a slap in the face cry.gif doh.gif

Being on a fixed income no more then $50 and sometimes less, which would include shipping.
