August Neidhardt von Gneisenau 1815.

Obverse: GNEISENAU. Bust left surrounded by a closed wreath, signed LOOS.
Reverse: Coat of Arms FORTITER FIDELITER FELICITER. (Bravely, Faithfully and Cheerfully.) on the ribbon, COLBERG on the centre of the Shield.
1815 28mm Blackened Iron.

Is this a case of "Swords into Plowshares"? or "Cannons into Medals"? Though listed as WM. this is in fact made of iron, it is attracted to a magnet & has slight rust spots. It would make sense because the French had been defeated in 1814(Bonaparte exiled to Elba) and the allies had many captured iron cannons. What would be better than to melt down some french cannons & produce medals of the victorious generals & leaders in 1815? Then Napoleon went & spoilt the party by stirring everything up again!

Tsingtao coin (known as Qingdao now)

I got this at a relatively cheap price considering the grade and how difficult it is to locate:

Weighs at 2.9 grams. I believe it is genuine - what do you think?

For those who don't know the significance of this coin, it is necessary to know for what part of China this coin is struck for. More information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qingdao

In short, this coin together with the 10 fen were struck only for German colony in China, known as Kiau Chau / Tsingtao / Qingdao (there's variations) and was struck for only one year.

Tough coin to find - I challenge you to find one similar in a reasonable price. Question - was this coin struck in China or in Germany?

Mystery token

Hi.
This is a Colombian token found this year in an excavation in downtown Bogota. I know it is a token used to play a card game called 'tresillo' also known as 'l'ombre'. It is made of tin. I think it might've been minted sometime during the second half of the nineteenth century and i'm pretty sure it was not minted in Colombia. Does anyone have even a slight idea about where it could've been minted? Could it be Moise?
Thanks for the help!

1817 large cent ... or is it?

I have an unusual piece here. It's a large cent with the date 1817.

http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=7234

Now take a look at the head of the coin. Notice anything unusual?

http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=7235

That's right. The date does not fit the obverse. Same with the reverse.

Taking a close look at this coin, it appears the second '1' is really a '4' that was worn away. Also it appears that a '1' was edged away to the right of the '8'. Additionally, it seems as if there is a medium sized '7' edged away to the left of the '7'.

http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=7236

My question...Is this a know variety? is this rare? or is this some kind of fake? I am working on a type set and am not familiar with these large cents. Your opinions/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

K-686(a) Corps Maneuvers 1908 I. Army Corps near Burgau. Struck aluminum with loop, 40.3mm, 7.0g., ST, RRR.

Obverse: Three shields with Busts of Prinz Rupprecht in center and topped with Bavarian crown; Ex. Graf V. Bothmer on the left; and Ex. Kress V. Kressenstein on the right. Behind the shields are fronds of palm and oak. Below, center a small, enameled coat of arms. All elements are contained within a pearled perimeter.

Reverse: CORPSMANÖVER DES I. ARMEECORPS (Corpsmaneuvers of the I. Army Corps). In field: BEI BURGAU / 1908 (near Burgau 1908). In exergue: BAHNHOF (Railway station).

These were Orders that were awarded to participating German Officers.

Although aluminum is today quite cheap, it was still a higher end material in 1908. These medals are struck like proofs with mirrored fields and matte devices and quite stunning in this condition.

Roman Revival at the Olympic Club

Another medal for the research pile. It is a souvenir of the "Roman Revival" at the San Francisco Olympic Club, April 17 - 22, 1893.

I'm guessing Augustus and Livia were portrayed by Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Schroeder.

The Olympic Club is the oldest athletic club in America and is still an active, exclusive club. The Roman Revival recreated Circus Maximus and featured music. That's all I know for now, but I have it in my sights as I search out other topics.

3 kopeeks 1860 BM

Here is a recent addition to my collection. 3 kopeeks 1860 BM (Warsaw Mint), one year type with the Ekaterinburg style eagle.

I noticed that for some reason the Conros price guide had upgraded the rarity of this coin quite significantly. In the previous editions it was valued on par with the variety that has the Warsaw style eagle. In my opinion that was a mistake, and this variant is scarcer. In the latest and greatest 12th edition it is assigned an R! Presumably, Conros does not have any statistics of sale of this variant? This once again seems odd.

This website lists 2 past sales of this type of coin: http://m-dv.ru/catalog/id,1401/all-prohod.html

And I know there was one in the Aalborg sale.

Just curious if anyone has any comparative statistics of this type vs. the Warsaw style eagle type?

Saint Brendan by John Mowbry-Clarke

I didn't really set out to buy this series in order, but my third acquisition is medal 3 with its book. I'm collecting them when I can with their original books. I typically get outbid, but I'm sometimes successful.

Saint Brendan supposedly "discovered" America. Whether he did or not remains under debate, but we do know that no image of him has survived, so Mowbry-Clarke's image is fanciful at best. The obverse imagery relates to themes from the chronicles of Brendan's voyages. The reverse carries the theme that "he That Seeketh Shall Find."

The 70mm bronze medal was struck by J.K. Davidson of Philadelphia in 1911.

Crimea Kyrmis

I have been watching quite some of the large Crimean Kyrmis coins over the years. They never come in inticing condition.
That is why I have not been tempted to bid on any of them yet. Does anybody know why they mostly have sort of porous surfaces?
I cannot imagine that they were cast?? I'd greatly appreciate opinions. Thank you, Sigi
P.S.: There is one on ebay again, hit the link below
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

1792???? Will this stump anyone?

Ok, it says 1792 on the obverse, and on the reverse i believe it to be HMC. I tried to do research on this bugger, but could not find anything at all! It appears there are letters on the edge that are unreadable. But i believe i picked out an - R-I-A-L, not too sure, but thats what it loks like to me. Can anyone out there identify this coin???
