Art
Whitman recently issued a new book entitled "History of the US Mint". Has anyone read it/reviewed it? Is it a pickup from the Taxay book or something totallly different?

AuldFartte
I haven't seen it yet, but I am planning on buying it in '07 sometime. I have heard no recommendations, either pro or con.
Art
I still have not found a good review on this book or someone who has actually read it. I'll request that my library purchase a copy otherwise it will have to go on my birthday/Christmas want list. Wouldn't mind getting the Taxay book too. bill
I haven't read the Whitman book, but then I have Taxay and the early Stewart history of the first mint. Add the three volumes by Burdette (the Renaissance series) and you've got a great, comprehensive history collection. I've skimmed the newer volume and I believe it is a briefer overview of the history. It is by David Lange, so its bound to be good, but not a substitute for the depth of the other works. Art
I still haven't picked this up. I haven't gotten the Taxay book either. I'm not really familiar with the Stewart book. Any info on that one you can share with us? So bill, you'd recommend the Taxay along with the Burdette Renaissance series and maybe the Stewart as a pretty comprehensive history of minting and US Numismatics. Do you still feel that way. Amos press had a special on the Burdette books. You could get all three for like $88 or some such.
bill
Frank H. Stewart published a History of the First United States Mint in 1924. Quarterman Publications issued a facsimile edition in 1974. Stewart was the last owner of the original mint building in Philadelphia and tried to get the city to accept it as a donation and move it before it was demolished. He failed, but he published a history of the mint and photographed many of the buildings features as it was demolished. He pieced together the history from contemporary records, letters, etc. I've not purchased the new book because it doesn't have material of interest to me that is covered better in the Stewart/Taxay/Burdette set of books. That said, the Wittman book is about $15 at Amazon and probably covers the basics for someone who dies not have the other books. The Wittman book covers into the modern era as well. If you like the Roosevelt era coinage and want to learn about its creation in great depth, Burdette is an excellent value.
Art1.2
Well I finally got a copy of this new US Mint Book. I haven't gotten the Burdett books or the original Taxay or Stewart books. So another entry for my 2012 Must Read List.
