To put it simply, unless your name is Star Grading Service, there is no way that the coin in question could ever be considered an MS-68 by any stretch of the imagination. I enlarged the image of the coin, and did a color inversion of it, and it is most definitely not an MS-68. It's a weak MS-60, or a strong AU-58 at best. You can avoid reality, but you can't escape it. Isaiah Interesting approach. What did you see that indicated wear or ? I've never bothered with gold and so I'm interested in how one grades a nice coin like this. I also have trouble with UNC coins in general telling the difference between things like ms65 & ms66. jtryka Posted January 25, 2010 Report Share Posted January 25, 2010 I guess it's sort of like the court's definition of pornography, you know it when you see it. After looking at so many Saints, you can tell pretty quickly which coins will go 63, 64, 65 or 66. For a supreme grade like MS-68, the coin has to jump out and slap you across the face with its beauty. This coin doesn't strike me as a slap your face beauty. That's not to say it can't be unc, or even as high as MS-63, since I've also learned over the years that it's incredibly difficult to grade gold by photos as they really do enhance imperfections, so a small mark barely perceptible to the naked eye ends up looking like a giant gouge! That said, my first impression of this coin is that it's probably a low-end unc., but that's just my opinion based on the photos. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
