Dave Kane
The royal Mint has started taking cupro-nickel 5 and 10 pence pieces out of circulation. http://www.royalmint.com/discover/uk-coins/cupro-nickel-replacement which will start to make pre 2012 coins scarcer it might be a good time to start hoarding. In a way it's a shame because pre 2008 coins will disappear with the various busts of the Queen and I bet it won't be long before the copper coins start to go future collectors will only find Ian Rank-Broadley busts of the Queen in pocket change and I still miss the pre-decimal collecting days when you could find Victorian coins and pre-1947 silver coins in your change. Art1.2
I think eventually all countries will be doing this. Some will reprocess the materials while others will just sell them as bulk scrap.
ScottO
some scarce ones already so better save up those
Scottishmoney
I find the 5p coins in dime rolls in roll searching in the USA. 20p coins substitute for nickels - I have several dozen of them - I really don't have a problem getting a coin worth 30 cents for a mere 5 cents. Less often I find 1p coins in cent rolls, only have maybe a dozen of them over the years.
ccg
So they're going to melt down 5p and 10p to make 20p and 50p?
jameso
More likely they will be used to make coins for other countries. The Royal Mint is the world's largest export mint.
Ætheling
So they're going to melt down 5p and 10p to make 20p and 50p? That's my thinking on the matter. Seems strange that the old large 5p and 10p coins might even outnumber their replacements in 10 years or so...
