This is my earliest piece of American paper ephemera, a lottery ticket for the construction of a bridge in York County, Massachusetts Bay, now this is in Maine. Maine until 1820 was part of Massachusetts, so anything from there will be noted as Massachusetts during that time. The signature on this note, William Pepperwill, is interesting, he lived in Maine for awhile and returned to England and became a Parliament member.

The reverse of the lottery ticket evidences the fact that paper was always in short supply and that the lottery ticket was printed on the blank side of an old document. Curiously the signature "Rishworth Jordan" is very traceable, and he lived from 1719 - 1806 and was a well known citizen in the colony.
